Hawk Talk

This is the second part of the Hawkeye women’s basketball team wrap up.
I got a chance to talk to Jan Jensen, associate head coach for Iowa, last week and we talked about remodeling Carver, the season and the seniors.
This week we’ll look at the underclassmen, the five new freshmen and the trip overseas.

The junior class consists of Trisha Nesbitt, Morgan Johnson and Jaime Printy.
Trisha only played in 16 games last year and the Iowa bench, which was already short, suffered.
I really thought she took one for the team by not taking a medical redshirt.


Fred Knight

Fred Garland Knight, 98, died May 7, 2011, in the Good Samaritan Home in West Union. A funeral Mass was held at Holy Name Catholic Church May 12. Burial services were at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Garland married Julia “Mary” Roach on Sept. 14, 1937, and enjoyed a blessed and happy marriage for over 66 years. Together they raised 10 children, including Janice Underdahl and Jerry (Mary) Knight of Solon, Garland and Mary had 36 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren.


Agnes Irving

Agnes Marie Irving, 103, died peacefully Friday, May 6, 2011, at the Solon Nursing Care Center.
Funeral Mass was celebrated May 10 at St. Wenceslaus Church in Iowa City with Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Wenceslaus Church, Iowa City Hospice or Solon Nursing Care Center. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service.


Merrill Smalley

Merrill D. Smalley, 78, of Ankeny, formerly of North Liberty and Coralville, passed suddenly and unexpectedly on May 10, 2011, in Coralville. Memorial services were held May 15 at First United Methodist Church in North Liberty, with the Rev. Doug Williams officiating. Masonic memorial services were held May 14 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.
A memorial fund has been established in his memory to the DeGowin Blood Center at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, c/o University of Iowa Foundation.


Jerry Haight

Jerry Keith Haight, 72, of Solon, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at his home on the lake, surrounded by his family. Services were held May 14 at Solon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Carol Kress presiding. Private family inurnment was in Oakland Cemetery, Solon.


Layde Gates

Layde Arlillian “Lil” Gould Gates, 90, of Marengo, died Sunday morning, May 8, 2011, at Rose Haven Nursing Home after a brief illness. Funeral services were held May 11 at Koszta United Methodist Church, Koszta, with the Rev. Katie Dawson officiating. Burial was in Koszta Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established.
Layde is survived locally by her daughter, Rita Gates of North Liberty.
Layde Arlillian “Lil” Gould was born Oct. 30, 1920, in rural Iowa County, south of Belle Plaine, the first of seven children born to Benjamin F. and Layde Eva (Sloan) Gould.


Jane Ducker

Funeral services for Jane Delores Ducker, 80, of Tipton, who died Thursday, May 5, 2011, were held May 10 at First United Church of Christ, Tipton, with Pastor David Lorenzen officiating. Graveside services for family and friends followed at Faith United Church of Christ Cemetery in Tripoli, with Pastor Marilyn Sargent officiating.


William Boulton

William E. Boulton, 88, of Columbus City, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. A memorial service was held May 13 at United Presbyterian Church in Columbus Junction. Inurnment was in the Columbus City Cemetery. Iowa Cremation is assisting the family.
William Edward Boulton was born on Dec. 19, 1922, to Glen and Flossie (Pretz) Boulton in Columbus Junction. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Bell on April 7, 1942, in Memphis, Mo. William farmed for 44 years.


Walkin'

I traveled to southern Illinois this past week for a few days of fishing on the Lake of Egypt with my father and brother, Brad.
The trip started in earnest in Rolling Meadows, a suburb of Chicago where my parents have lived the past 60 years. We took the Northwest Line train from Arlington Heights to the Ogilvie Station in the heart of the city.


Food For Thought

Once upon a time, when Sugar Bottom was young, we had the entire place to ourselves. There were great piles of firewood free for the taking. There were no designated camping areas; we could camp wherever we pleased. There were no fire pits; we could build great, roaring bonfires right on the bare ground. There were, also, no restrooms, showers, garbage cans, picnic tables, electricity or safe drinking water.
