CCA loss is Solon gain

OXFORD– Frustration, anger and emotions boiled over Wednesday night (Oct. 17) as the Board of Directors for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district faced a crowd demanding answers and action in the wake of the resignation of long-time softball coach Jim White.
The popular coach with 18 years at the helm of the varsity squad quit his coaching position with the intent to fill a vacancy in Solon’s program. During his tenure, White led the Clippers to six state championships, two state runner-up titles and a pair of state third-place finishes.

Council allows variances for off-street parking, open space requirements

SOLON– Site plans for a proposed downtown microbrewery have been approved by Solon’s Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council.
Exterior elevations for 101 W. Main St., the former location of Joensy’s Restaurant, depict a one-story structure with 5,209 square feet and an exterior patio along South Iowa Street encompassing 1,400 square feet.
Passage by the council required several variances, but council members approved the site plan unanimously.

Hawkeye women reload

The first thing that jumps out about the Hawkeye women’s basketball team is consistency.
The last five years, Lisa Bluder’s teams have won 21, 21 20, 22 and 19 games. They’ve also finished in the top half of the Big Ten, were Co-Big Ten champs in 2007-08 and made it to the NCAA tournament all five years.
One of the best things Lisa Bluder and her coaching staff do is develop great leaders and this team has three seniors that will lead the Hawks.
You start with Morgan Johnson, a 6-5 center who coach Bluder says is one of the best centers in the country.

The longest day

Hayden Fry once said that “the sun don’t shine on the same old dog every day.”
The sun certainly wasn’t shining at Kinnick Stadium Saturday, and Iowa played like a dog in the night game, losing 38-14 to Penn State.
I’ve said this before– I’m not a big fan of night games at Kinnick.
I don’t mind watching bowl games at night, but when I get up at 6 a.m., bake some cherry cobbler and have the van loaded at 9, then have to wait 10 hours until kickoff…it’s a real long day.
