Laurence Kessler

Laurence Joseph Kessler, 88, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.
Funeral services were held Sept. 14 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Liberty. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. A memorial fund has been established. Online condolences may be made to the family at hendersonbarkerfuneralhome.com.
Laurence was born Jan. 19, 1924, in Cosgrove, the son of Leo and Mary Walsh Kessler. He graduated from Lone Tree High School. He was united in marriage to Leona Jedlicka on Jan. 16, 1946, in Lone Tree.


Cecilia Kessler

Cecilia Marie Kessler, 86, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, in her home after a short illness. Services were held Aug. 31 at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Cecilia is survived by her husband, Clarence; two sons, James and John (Amy) Kessler, all of Cedar Rapids; and a sister, Bernadine (Marvin) Goody of Lone Tree.


Earl “Bill” Hunter

Earl “Bill” Hunter, 96, of Lone Tree, passed away on Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at Country View in North Liberty. Funeral services were held Sept. 30 at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. Burial was at the Lone Tree Cemetery with full military rites. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Country View in North Liberty or American Cancer Society in memory of Bill. Walkin'

While I joke (and exaggerate a little) about Sabra incessantly taking photos while on our rides, we are fairly compatible on the bicycle trail. If the surface allows, I ride on the right with her a half bicycle length ahead on the left. This allows her to set the pace– she sets a good one– and for me to hear with my left ear, the one that works, a little. This formation also facilitates emergency photo opportunities, which can come at any moment. I never know when that woman will clamp down on her brakes to take a photo– of moss, say– so it’s best not to be directly behind her.


Food For Thought

It was quite a few years ago, when Sandra Lawrence was principal at Lakeview Elementary in Solon, that a sign appeared on the wall of the teacher’s lounge. I assumed that Sandra was responsible for the sign, but nobody ever said for sure. It was only about the size of a sheet of typing paper, and it said simply, “Happiness is a conscious decision, not just a reaction to circumstances.”
