Rilda Fish

Rilda Colleen Fish, 62, of Marion, formerly of Shellsburg, died Oct. 12, 2012, at the Solon Care Center following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Oct. 16 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg.


Robert Michael Dooley

Robert Michael Dooley, 59, passed away on Oct. 16, 2012. Robert, known as Mike, was born on July 11, 1953. Mike attended Drake University to earn a bachelor of arts in history.
He loved to read about history and he often used it to make sense of the world. He loved his horse Rosemary. He was a storyteller and made everyone around him laugh. He never spoke out of anger and hardly ever raised his voice. His sudden and early passing will leave a void in many lives, but memories of him will serve to fill that hole with joy and laughter.


Walkin'

It was with a warm glow that we rode past Arlington Cemetery, across the Potomac and unto the National Mall.
My sense of well-being came from the Italian, Greek, Mexican and Thai sandwich I had for lunch; Sabra’s from the countless photo opportunities that presented themselves ahead. We also basked in the shared knowledge that we had bicycled two hundred miles to get here.


Food For Thought

The first two things that come to mind, when the first crisp days of autumn arrive, are apple-picking and leaf-raking. From about the time I was in third grade, my mother would admonish us to come straight home from school because there were apples to pick, or leaves to rake. Before that, we lived in a house on a large double lot where my dad had planted nearly all the yard with a garden, we had no fruit trees and only two tall elms in the front of the house near the street.

Red Cross partners with Solon firefighters for Battery Up! Nov. 3

SOLON– During November, the American Red Cross is partnering with Solon firefighters to provide Battery Up, a free program offering in-home fire prevention to elderly, disabled and low-income residents.
Solon firefighters and local Red Cross volunteers will visit residents to change smoke detector batteries and identify fire safety hazards in the home. Residents wishing to receive the in-home visit must make an appointment for Monday, Nov. 3, by calling 319-393-3500, ext. 230.

Follow Forevergreen Road

NORTH LIBERTY– Let not history repeat itself.
At least, that’s what officials from the cities of Coralville and North Liberty seem to be aiming for as they revisit a 2004-2006 road study.
The City of Coralville hired an engineering firm in 2004 to conduct a study of Forevergreen Road to generate possible alignments for its extension eastward to Dubuque Street. Coralville paid Earth Tech $59,000 to do the study, with a $15,000 contribution from the City of North Liberty.
Earth Tech presented its final report and a recommendation for the road extension in 2006.

Soup supper a warm tradition for Ely Presbyterian Church

ELY– It’s been a comforting tradition for 62 years.
The First Presbyterian Church near Ely is hosting its 63rd annual Chicken Soup and Kolach supper on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 4 until 7 p.m., and while the years have brought some changes to the fundraising event, much remains the same.
And the hundreds who attend like it that way.
Church secretary and soup supper volunteer Misti Huedepohl said there are repeat customers who come every year, but as time goes on, new generations of soup lovers come to make it their own tradition as well.


Sutliff Bridge spans Cedar River again

SUTLIFF– With cold ones in their hands and smiles on their faces, about 300 people gathered in Sutliff Friday afternoon to celebrate the return of history.
“This place matters and these people matter,” said Rod Sullivan, chair of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.

MARION– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers took a step backward Friday night, dropping to a 4-4 record in week eight of the nine-week regular football season. The drop came as the Marion Indians won 27-0 at Thomas Park in Marion.
The Indians scored on a 3-yard run in the first quarter, twice in the second with a 24-yard run and a 15-yard run, and again in the third with a 10-yard pass.


CCA cross country teams place 10th at WaMaC conference meet

DEWITT– The WaMaC conference cross country meet was held Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Grace Lutheran Camp near DeWitt under gray skies and with a 10-20 mph wind out of the northwest chilling the course.
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) junior varsity (JV) and varsity squads competed with the JV boys placing seventh overall while only four JV girls ran for an un-scored, incomplete team. The varsity boys and girls teams both placed tenth overall.
Madelaine Hinsley finished fourth in varsity competition with a time of 15:37 while Jack Murray was the fifth-finishing CCA runner in boys’ varsity action.
