North Liberty hunting for missing ordinance

By Lori Lindner
North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– It might surprise North Liberty residents to learn that a certain amount of hunting is legal within their own city limits.
Or it was, until the law was inadvertently taken off the books.
It caught city officials off guard to learn that an ordinance adopted in October 2003 allowing people to hunt geese and antlerless deer with bows and arrows inside the city limits had been removed from the city’s Code of Ordinances when the document was recodified in recent years.

Audit finds weaknesses in ICCSD business practices

By B. Adam Burke
North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Last year, Iowa City Community School (ICCSD) Superintendent Stephen Murley ordered an external audit to track down inefficiencies in the school system’s administrative departments.
Payroll, purchasing, accounts payable, budget, technology, human resources, food services and physical plant departments were scrutinized by a Wilmette, Ill. Company, Synesi Associates, who did an operations review for the district.
Their report calls for the district to install Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software.

Growing enrollment = shrinking space

NORTH LIBERTY— North Bend Elementary is nearly full with almost every available space being used as classrooms. Principal Brenda Parker and some of her staff gave the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School Board of Directors a guided tour Wednesday, Jan. 11, to show first-hand how the school, which opened in 2008, is already bursting at the seams. The school had 173 students in its first year and has 360 now. With more housing developments in the North Bend neighborhood, Parker and the board expect that number to continue to increase.

ICCSD budget director resigns

IOWA CIT– Paul Bobek, director of administrative services in the Iowa City Community School District, resigned his position on Jan. 9 with a separation agreement, general release and covenant not to sue the district.
The following day, school board president Marla Swesey, representing the school district, signed the agreement at a closed meeting in the district administrative offices. The resignation was effective immediately and its timing came as a surprise to the district.
Bobek oversaw the district’s budget and accounting offices.

Streets project inches forward

By Lori Lindner
North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– Visiting the city’s Streets Maintenance facility in North Liberty was once described as like being in third world country, due to its small, rustic and outdated office that became less functional as time went by.
But the streets department will soon be brought into the 21st century.

NORTH LIBERTY– Jeanette Hopkins’ best ideas start with the words, “What if?”

A simple place to shoot the breeze

SWISHER– He did it, but he’s not really sure why.
Rob Pudil and his wife Gena recently purchased Melsha’s Tap from Loraine Melsha and renamed it Shooters on Second.
“I honestly don’t know why we did it,” Rob said. As the owner of Affordable SoftWater, he’s no stranger to running a business. He also worked in a bar back in the 1980s. “The opportunity came up (to buy the bar) but there was no rhyme or reason to it.” Rob said he shot Melsha an offer, and a month later Melsha asked Gena if he was serious.

Hayek taking leave for judge advocate school

By Doug Lindner
Solon Economist
SOLON– City Attorney Ben Hayek is leaving temporarily for a much bigger firm.
Hayek, Solon’s legal representative since 2008, will be taking training to become a Judge Advocate with the U.S. Army Reserves beginning in February.
“I am essentially the equivalent of an army reservist,” Hayek explained. The part-time commission allows him to continue his private practice in Iowa City, but to become a full-fledged Judge Advocate General (JAG), he will need to complete an 18-week course.
