TAB hosts Life-size Candy Land game Jan. 13

On Friday, Jan. 13, the Teen Advisory Board (TAB) will be hosting a free family event playing a life-sized Candy Land game in the meeting room from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. Plan to join the fun as you become a real live game piece on the life size Candy Land board. It will be most popular with kindergarten through fourth grades but any aged person is welcome to participate. This event will celebrate the conclusion of Toni Russo’s latest window display, Candy Land, which will be on display until Jan. 14.

January Storytime guest

Storytime theme for next week, Tuesday, Jan. 17, will be “Colors”. On Tuesday, Jan. 24, Gwen Prentice from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will be our guest. Prentice will be coming to share her knowledge of the world of nature through the eyes of preschoolers. On Tuesday, Jan. 31, the theme will be the letter “T.” Storytime meets at 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday and is open to all children aged two through five, their caregivers and siblings.

December drawing winner

Congratulations to Loren Wilkerson for being the December winner in the adult reading program drawing. The monthly prize is provided by Friends of the Library. One entry is allowed for every book read by adults, 18 years and older. Be sure to enter your name in the drawing at the circulation desk.

Read some staff favorites

A display of non-fiction books that are favorites of the library staff has been set up in the black shelving unit just inside the door. Be sure to take a look. It is a working display, which means you are welcome to check-out any book that is displayed. If a book you are interested in isn’t available, ask the person at the circulation desk to put you on a waiting list. A few selected are listed below.

Solon Senior Advocates announce three upcoming events

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates are hitting the road again this month.
Thursday, Jan. 19, is a trip to the Johnson County Historical and Car Museum and MacBride Hall, departing following a meal at Old Gold Diner.
Reggie’s Weenies will be catering hot dogs, Waldorf salad and peach cobbler to the Monday, Jan. 30, “Meal and Movie” at the Solon Public Library featuring “The Music Man.”
A bus trip to a Rock Island Circa 21 production of “Grease” is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 15, leaving at 9:30 a.m. from the Solon Recreation and Nature Area.

Artists sought for 2nd Calf Classic

SOLON– January is the kick-off for the second annual Calf Classic sponsored by the Solon Library Foundation. Decorated calves are entered in the Beef Days parade and are auctioned to the highest bidder at the conclusion of the Beef Days celebration.

Second adult yoga class offered

SOLON– Due to tremendous interest and a large number of participants in yoga, the City of Solon announced the offering of another five-week yoga class. This session will feature two to three certified yoga instructors, to enhance fitness, flexibility and health. Yoga will be held from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. First and second grade basketball

SOLON– First and second grade basketball programs are being offered by Solon Parks and Recreation at the Lakeview Elementary gym beginning Saturday, Feb. 18. The program dates are Feb. 18, Feb. 25, March 3 and March 17. Medin Family Dental hangs shingle

SOLON– Solon dentist Kristine Medin hasn’t decided where to hang the sign for her new office in Solon. She’s now taking appointments and practicing dentistry after starting over in the former dentist office on the corner.
The spot has been through some changes over the years, having been a gas station and a bakery. Medin, a University of Iowa dental school graduate, was glad to take over a former dentist office, but said she rebuilt it to bring it up to date.
“I met Dr. Crossley and was going to work with him (before he died),” she said.

JECC budget accepted but not embraced

IOWA CITY— Gary Albrecht was in the hot seat. As the Executive Director for the Joint Emergency Communications Center (JECC), it was his task to bring forth a budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors. Albrecht made his presentation Monday afternoon, Dec. 19, during a supervisors’ budget work session, and found himself having to account for some of the accounting.
