Arlon Nelson

Arlon T. Nelson, 97, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital. Funeral services were held Jan. 20 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Pastor Tye Male of New Covenant Bible Church officiated. Burial was at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Local survivors include his brother, Weir (Mary) Nelson of Ely.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eleanor; his son, Dr. Robert J. Nelson; daughter-in-law, Sue Nelson; and his brother, Irwin Nelson.


Rosemary Miller

Rosemary C. Miller, 89, of Solon Retirement Village, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, at her home. Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 16 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade St., Iowa City, IA 52240.


Doris Kearney

Doris Sara Kearney, 89, of Marion, formerly of Iowa Falls, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, at home. Per Doris’ wishes, there were no visitation or services. Private family inurnment will be at Iowa Falls, at a later date.
Local survivors include Mary J. Claassen of Swisher.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; siblings, Russell Sturgis, Allen Sturgis, Blanche Degraf, Ethel Sturgis and Walter Sturgis; and her grandparents, Sara and Walter Stewart.


Dolores Chaplin

Dolores “Dee/Dolly” Goss Chaplin, 76, died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at her home in Coralville. Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 17 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cosgrove with Father Dunn officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Dolores was born on Jan. 13, 1936, in Oxford, the daughter of Paul and Marguerite (Rohret) Scheetz. She spent most of her life in Oxford, where she graduated from Cosgrove High School in 1954.


Edward Bangtson

Edward Willard Bangtson, 81, died peacefully at his home Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, surrounded by his family. Memorial services were held Jan. 20 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in North Liberty, with the Rev. Tim Smith officiating. Military honors followed the service. Burial will be at a later date.
Ed was born May 9, 1930, near Rockwell City, where he was a 1948 graduate of Rockwell City High School. He served in the Korean War from 1951 until 1953. On Dec. 24, 1985, Ed married Chris.


Samantha Broulik

Samantha Jo Broulik, infant daughter of Ronda Stucker and Jacob Broulik of Iowa City, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospitals where she was born on Dec. 15, 2011.
Funeral services were held Jan. 23, 2012, at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Samantha’s memory. Online condolences may be sent for her family through the web www.gayandciha.com.
Local survivors include Kim Stucker and Ethel Good of North Liberty.


Merrill Aubrecht

Merrill “Shorty” Aubrecht, 79, died on Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, at VAMC following a long illness.
Funeral Services with military honors were held Jan. 17 at Lensing’s Oak Hill in Coralville with the Rev. Alecia Williams officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Coralville. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.


Terry Amspoker

Terry Lee Amspoker, 67, of Fort Collins, Colo., formerly of Cedar Rapids and Clarion, passed away suddenly on Dec. 31, 2011, at Pouder Valley Hospital, Fort Collins. Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
Local survivors include daughter, Teri Anne (Dean) Billick of Ely.
Terry was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Loren and Catherine Amspoker; father- and mother-in-law, Richard Sr. and Jeanne McGonigle; and brother-in-law, Rick McGonigle.


Walkin'

To get back to my story about finding a skeleton in the basement of my office, I need to flesh out the list of suspects as if the victim had been me instead of some yet to be revealed personage.
As detailed earlier, Solon was and is a great town filled with wonderful people, but it is a small town nevertheless. As the owner and operator of the newspaper for some 20 years, it was inevitable that I angered at least a few people along the way, and more than once I saw murder in their eyes.
One such citizen was Dick the insurance agent.


Food For Thought

It was the late 1950s when we moved into a big, turn of the century house in the Goosetown section of Iowa City. My neighbor’s house next door had been built at the same time as ours and was almost a twin to it. We even shared a garage that straddled the property line. It had been built as a carriage house and had doors at both ends, so that one could drive the horses and carriage straight into it, unhitch the horses and lead them out the other door. The two halves of the garage were separated by a masonry wall.
