Basketball and wrestling seasons are over so it’s time for some spring football.
Kirk Ferentz had his first press conference for spring football last week and he talked about the energy the new football coaches brought to the program.
The next couple of weeks I’ll break down the offense, defense and special teams.
This week I’ll talk about the offensive line, tight ends and fullbacks.
I like to start with the O-line because for most programs, including Iowa, the line is a big reason you win or lose.


Kenneth Kelchen

Kenneth G. Kelchen, 63, of Dyersville, died Saturday, March 17, 2012, at his residence after a brief but courageous bout with cancer. Mass of Christian burial was held March 21 at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, with burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Worthington. The Rev. Dennis Quint officiated.
Ken was born Aug. 10, 1948, the son of Alphonse and Germaine (Recker) Kelchen. He attended St. Paul’s school, where he was a member of the last graduating class. He married Linda M. Hocking on Feb. 13, 1971, in Marion.


Margaret Stastny-Havlik

Margaret C. “Granny” Stastny-Havlik, 95, of Solon, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, March 20, 2012. There was a visitation on March 23 at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Her wishes were to have her body donated to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.


Julie Hangartner

Julie Hangartner, 67, of Solon, died Sunday, March 18, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Family and friends gathered March 23 at Stewart Baxter Funeral and Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald; daughter, Letae (David Luciano) Pruisman-Luciano of Cedar Rapids; son, Ronald Pruisman of Cedar Rapids; sister, Kathi (Jay) Bolles of Cincinnati, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Deric Stutzman, Devon Stutzman and Christopher Luciano.


Jean Ellenbecker

Jean Ellenbecker, 86, of Tama, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2012, at her home. A Mass of Christian burial was held March 21 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama, with Father Michael Mescher as celebrant. Interment followed at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Tama.
Jean was born July 5, 1925, in Tama, the daughter of Dr. W. L. and Inez (Grife) Ehret. She graduated from Tama High School in 1943. On Sept. 4, 1944, she was united in marriage to Don Ellenbecker in Huron, S.D.
Jean was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama.

One hundred fifty: Approximate amount of days since the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) policy was repealed.
Eleven and one half: The number of years U.S. Navy Lt. Gary Ross and same-sex partner had been together before becoming the first same-sex military couple married in the United States.
Third: Class of Petty Officer of Jeremy Johnson, who became the first person discharged under DADT to re-enlist.
Eighty: Days at sea U.S. Navy Petty Officer Marissa Gaeta served before winning her ship’s raffle to have the first kiss with her same-sex partner after returning to port.


Food For Thought

I hadn’t watched television in the morning since a year ago when I had a head cold and felt too tired to do anything constructive and too bleary-eyed to read or work at the computer. It had been quite a few years since I’d had a cold and I more or less rediscovered that the absolutely worst thing about having a cold is daytime television. Since then, I’d stubbornly left the set turned off before news time at five o’clock, until that first snowy, blowy day we had last January.
