New state law pushes gender equity on local boards

SOLON– The board of adjustments and the planning and zoning commission in Solon are 100 percent, totally ruled by men and the patriarchy must end, according to a new state law that seeks to balance the gender makeup of city and county boards and commissions.
The North Liberty and Solon library boards’ female slant must also be righted and the new law, which passed in 2009 and took effect Jan. 1. The new rule gives local governments three months to make a good faith effort.


Griefshare will begin Saturday, March 17

SOLON– St. Mary Catholic Church, Solon United Methodist Church and Our Lord’s Church of Solon are co-sponsoring a community support group called Griefshare that will begin Saturday, March 17, at 9 a.m. in the library at St. Mary.  Griefshare is a program to help individuals cope with the loss of a loved one.


living last supper

The Solon United Methodist Church is holding a “Living Last Supper” performance on Sunday, April 1, at the Solon Middle School auditorium. Music begins at 6:30 p.m. and the performance starts at 7 p.m. There will be no admission fee, however a free will donation will be taken. Proceeds will go to the Solon Habitat for Humanity Project. You may also bring canned food donations that will go to the Solon Food Pantry. Thank you in advance for your contributions and support.


LEGION FISH FRY

The Solon American Legion will hold Friday night fish fries from March 2 until April 6, from 5 until 7:30 p.m. at the Legion hall. Dinner includes Alaskan pike, coleslaw, potato, bread, dessert and beverage for $9 adults, $4 children 5-12. Children under five eat free. As a bonus, shrimp will be served along with your fish on March 16 and April 6. Carry-outs are available.

BIG WIN over Nebraska

The Hawkeyes, after losing to Nebraska in football and also the first time they played the Cornhuskers in basketball, knocked off Nebraska at Lincoln last Wednesday, 62-53.
What a difference in the two games.
Nebraska scored 79 points in its win in Iowa City, was 27-52 from the floor, 7-20 from three-point range, 18-24 from the free throw line and out-rebounded the Hawks, 34-27.


Robert Procok

Robert Procok, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died Feb. 29, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy following a short illness. Funeral services were held March 3 at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial was at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.


Mildred Miller

Mildred “Darlene” Miller, 75, of Swisher, died peacefully Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at Mercy Hospice. Funeral services were held Feb. 28 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. Burial was at Memory Gardens in Iowa City following the service.
Darlene was born April 3, 1936, in Rock Island, Ill., the daughter of William and Ida Irene Wilson. She worked for many years at her business before retiring in 1993.
Darlene was a very loving and family-oriented person and family always came first.


Eunice Limkemann

Eunice A. Limkemann, 91, of Oelwein, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at the Oelwein Healthcare center. Funeral services were held March 3 at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf. The Rev. Marshall Hahn officiated. Interment was at United Brethren Cemetery, rural St. Olaf.
She was born Oct. 9, 1920, at St. Olaf, the daughter of Martin and Mabel (Nesteby) Olson. She attended school through the eighth grade in Iowa. She was united in marriage to John Limkemann on Nov. 23, 1938, at St. Olaf. Eunice was a homemaker who loved spending time with family and always enjoyed having a good time.


Colleen Lenz

Colleen Conner Lenz, 74, of Iowa City died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at Mercy Hospital– Iowa City. Memorial services were held Feb. 27 at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.
Colleen Conner was born Jan. 13, 1938, in Iowa City, the daughter of Lawrence and Evelyn (Sparrgrove) Conner. She graduated from St. Patrick’s Catholic Schools in 1956, and had attended the University of Iowa. She married Paul E. Swartzendruber on Aug. 11, 1956. She later married Ernest F. Lenz on May 8, 1993. She had lived most of her lifetime in the Iowa City area, with a short time in Burlington.
