NORTH LIBERTY– A panther has been unleashed at Penn Elementary School; not from chains or the bars of an iron cage, but from a 500-pound log of soft pine.
Pat Doyle is a former Solon resident who has carved quite a niche for himself, creating a successful business using a chain saw and his God-given talents. He came to Penn school in North Liberty on Friday, April 13, to craft a wooden rendition of the school’s mascot for a permanent display honoring Penn’s 50th year in the Iowa City Community School District.


Clipper boys dominate in Tipton

TIPTON– It was supposed to be a much bigger meet. The Tipton co-ed meet, the second of the season, is often a chance for track and field teams with rain-outs to make-up events and get a full season in. However, this spring’s weather pattern has led to few if any postponements or cancellations.
So the field was a little thin.


Tough days for CCA girls’ golf

MIDDLE AMANA– The Clipper girls’ golf team met Independence on the greens Thursday, April 26, for a dual meet. Even with nearly perfect weather conditions it was a less-than-perfect day for Jason Goslin’s crew.
“It was a tough day for both teams,” assistant coach Carmine Scarpa said. “Scores were high and the long walk took its toll.”
CCA’s Gabi Scarpa tied with Indee’s Mackenzie Black for first with a 48, but a card on the second hole bought her the medal. Scarpa had medaled at all six meets in which she competed so far this season.

West boys out-kick Lin-Mar 3-2

CORALVILLE– At halftime, West High coach Brad Stiles wasn’t overly thrilled with his guys’ first-half performance. After shifting some players into new positions and reviewing his strategy and desire for at least one more goal (West led 1-0 at the break thanks to Justin Baker scoring not quite three minutes into the first half); he sent them back onto the field with these parting words: “Do it in the first 10 minutes and we’ll all have big smiles on our faces at the end.”
It didn’t quite work out that way.


Services added to free health fair June 2 in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Nutrition demonstrations, physical exercises, ergonomics information, visual tests and free tooth brushes and mouthguards have been added to the list of services available free at the Healthy Living Fair, hosted by First United Methodist Church in North Liberty from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 2.
The fair, a ministry of the church, is for North Liberty residents who need basic health care checks but face difficulty covering the costs and who, otherwise, might avoid the checks.


ICCSD education foundation to sponsor breakfast on May 16

Lions Club invites community to learn more on Thursday, May 17

County auditor candidate Weipert to host meet-and-greet May 13

TIFFIN– Travis Weipert, Democratic candidate for Johnson County Auditor, will be at The Tiffin Depot Sunday, May 13, from 9-10 a.m. The public is invited to join Travis and get to know him while sharing thoughts, questions and concerns. UI DeGowin blood drive May 14

IOWA CITY– The University of Iowa DeGowin Blood Center will hold a blood drive at the North Liberty Recreation Center on Monday, May 14, from 4 until 7 p.m. in the Gerdin Conference Rooms 1 and 3.
To be eligible to donate blood a person must:
• Be 17 years old or 16 with parental consent.
• Weigh at least 110 pounds.
• Be cold or flu symptom-free for five days.
• Pass a mini-physical and medical history inquiry.
• Have a photo ID.
• Know Social Security or driver’s license number.
• Drink fluids and have a meal prior to donation.
• Bring a list of current medications.


New directions for CCA board members

TIFFIN— It happened to our state legislators and cost us a congressman. And it’s also happening to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School Board of Directors.
It’s redistricting, and it could change the look of the board in 2013.
The results of the 2010 Census led to a number of political districts being redrawn, and the school board director districts are no exception. The school district is divided into four divisions: District 1 includes the Amana Colonies, District 2 has Tiffin, District 3 includes Oxford, and District 4 encompasses CCA’s portions of North Liberty and Coralville.
