‘Free Fishing Days’ at Liberty Centre Park on June 2

NORTH LIBERTY– Family fishing, fishing tips, food and prizes are featured Saturday, June 2, at Liberty Centre Park in North Liberty. As part of Iowa’s “Free Fishing Days,” veteran anglers and parks and fisheries workers will assist families from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at a fishing clinic.
During “Free Fishing Days,” Iowa residents may fish without a license, although other regulations, such as possession and size limits still apply.

TIFFIN— Michon Jackson sees the good in government. As Tiffin’s first city administrator, she also thinks more people would too if they only understood it better and if it were more accessible to the people.
Jackson, a Silvis, Ill. native, started in the new position in April, also serving as the city clerk. Prior to coming to Tiffin, she served as the assistant to the city manager in West Liberty, worked for the City of Moline, Ill., and assumed roles in various other levels of government over two decades.


A helping hand for hire

OXFORD— In 2009 the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) looked at the passage of the statewide penny SILO tax and realized school districts would likely go on a building boom to update aging buildings and put up new ones to address growth. In their words, in order to stretch those dollars to help Iowa students achieve at the highest levels possible, the Iowa Construction Advocate Team (ICAT) was formed. ICAT’s objective is to “ensure that every penny is spent improving the learning environments shared by our teachers and students.”

NORTH LIBERTY– Keep it down, North Liberty
The North Liberty City Council passed the second reading of amendments to its noise ordinance last Tuesday, May 22. While there are not a lot of big changes to the city’s laws about keeping the peace, there are a few minor details that warranted some discussion from the council
When City Administrator Ryan Heiar heard a complaint from one city councilor about the noise of construction work going late into the night, Heair said a review of the rules led to a revision as well.


Beaver Kreek Fire contained mostly to attic, roof

NORTH LIBERTY– A fire destroyed the roof of a combined commercial and residential apartment building in North Liberty’s Beaver Kreek Centre last Tuesday.
Building 335, to the west of Pizza Ranch, Dairy Queen and Jewelry By Harold, is the location of JMI Laboratories and a single residential apartment on its first floor, with eight one- and two-bedroom apartments on the second story. All nine of the residences were occupied, but only one unit reportedly had someone inside at the time of the fire. They got out, and none of the residents were injured.


Loebsack is our voice in Washington

I support Dave Loebsack for U.S. Congress in the June 5 Democratic primary.
Dave deserves a fourth term because he did what he said he would in 2005 when he started his exploratory committee: he has been the voice for Iowans who have no voice in Washington.
While I don’t agree with every vote Loebsack has taken, he is approachable. He and his staff will listen, and take action on issues that are important to me and to Iowa’s Second Congressional District.


Schwab to press on for permit

JOHNSON COUNTY– The builder and owner of the Celebration Barn finally has something to celebrate.
Or, at least, there is a celebration to work toward.
Rural Solon resident Dick Schwab has been seeking a special events permit from Johnson County since his original five-year Conditional Use permit for a home business expired in 2011, the county amended its ordinance for special events in January of this year, and the Johnson County Board of Adjustment disagreed on its interpretation last month.


Round one to Regina

IOWA CITY– Last Tuesday’s intense battle went to Regina but round two is coming up this Friday.  
The Solon Lady Spartans travelled to Iowa City Regina last week for a fierce competition. Solon and Regina are know for having a stiff rivalry and this game was no exception. Both teams kept up their intensity throughout the entire game. Solon struck early with an Alison McKinnie goal, but the Regals answered with four goals in the first half.  


Mebus’ throw lands gold medal

DES MOINES– Connor Mebus threw the shot put 57 feet, 11.75 inches, shattering his own school record and bringing home a gold medal from the state track meet held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The monster throw came on his third throw in the preliminaries after he had tossed an impressive 54 feet on his second throw. Mebus peaked at the best time possible, as the second place thrower from Decorah hit 56 feet, 7 inches. Mebus became the 14th state champion for throwing coach Brad Wymer, and the first to come from Solon.
