Lynn Smith

Lynn Marie Smith, 44, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, May 3, 2012. Funeral Mass was held May 7 at St. Matthew Catholic Church by the Rev. David Beckman. Inurnment was at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Local survivors include Marianne (John) Barnes of Swisher.
Lynn was born Nov. 11, 1967, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Richard and Fran (Walker) Smith. She was an inspector with Whirlpool Refrigeration in Amana.
Memorials may be made to Camp Courageous.


Glenn Schuller

Glenn Marvin Schuller, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital from complications of Parkinson’s. Services were held May 11 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial followed in Hala Cemetery, near Walford.
Glen was born Dec. 12, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, the son of George and Elsie Ione (Evenson) Schuller. He married Darlene Mumm on Nov. 26, 1951, in Cedar Rapids. He was a Korean War veteran.
Local survivors include David (Patti) Schuller of Swisher.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Esther Garbers.


Tommy D. “Tom” Millhollin

Tommy D. “Tom” Millhollin, 70 of Iowa City died Sunday, May 6, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Funeral services were held May 10 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with burial at Memory Gardens Cemetery with military honors.


Harold Higgins

Harold M. Higgins, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital following a brief illness. Funeral services were held May 11 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Julie Freese, certified celebrant, officiated with burial and military honors in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Local survivors include Tami (Dan) Drexler of Swisher.


Reda Herman

Reda Laura Yeries Herman, 98, of Swisher, died Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Services were held May 7 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial followed in Anderson Cemetery near Swisher.


Ila Ernst

Ila Marie Ernst, 92, of rural Johnson County, most recently a resident of Crestview Care Center in West Branch, passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, after a sudden illness surrounded by loving family.
Funeral Services were held May 12 at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City with burial following at Fairview Cemetery in rural Johnson County.

Sylvia J. Delbridge, 92, a resident of MethWick, formerly of Swisher, died Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at The MethWick Community, Cedar Rapids. Services were held May 8 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Tom Carver. Burial was May 9 at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Colchester, Ill.


Walkin'

“What’s this?” I asked Mom while holding up a three-foot section of doll rod with an odd-looking plastic yellow attachment on one end.
I was in my parents’ garage helping them do a little spring cleaning.
Dad is out of the hospital after a long stay recovering from a fall that broke his hip. He was almost back to his old self when his heart started acting up, setting him back significantly. He gets around with a walker, but not very far or fast.


Food For Thought

That’s what most of my high school classmates wrote after they received their invitations to our class reunion this month. Last February, I sent the usual Valentines to over 70 classmates to remind them to write something to put in the annual newsletter I put together for them. About 15 of them still live in our hometown, several married to classmates, and a good many of them are the ones who have traditionally done the lion’s share of the work in planning our reunions at five year intervals.

Free CPR training

IOWA CITY– In honor of National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) week, May 20 through 26, the Johnson County Ambulance Service is offering free CPR training for the public. It is important that more people survive cardiac arrest. The greater the number of people who know CPR, the better someone’s chances of surviving. Heart attack, drowning or other problems may cause someone’s heart to stop pumping blood. This is called cardiac arrest. If you give a person CPR right away they are more likely to survive. Most cardiac arrests happen at home with family members.
