The un-Dewey-ing of a library

NORTH LIBERTY– Before the North Liberty Community Library began making big changes with its expansion, staff was busy making some important changes to its content.
The library did away with the long-established Dewey Decimal system of shelving and cataloging books and other materials, changing to a system that organizes them by their subjects.
While the staff members say it will make it much easier for patrons to find things, it was not an easy undertaking to make such a huge transformation.
In fact, it took over a year to complete the change-over.


All spaced out

IOWA CITY— In November, Johnson County voters will see a bond referendum on the ballot to fund a new criminal justice center to replace the existing sheriff’s office, jail and courthouse. The board of supervisors will be asking the taxpayers for $46.8 million while dipping into reserves for the balance of the $4.8 million (estimated) project.
As part of a campaign to make the case for the new combined facility, the board arranged a tour of the jail and courthouse for the quarterly meeting of local governments, held June 20 in Iowa City. Supervisor Rod Sullivan explained why.


Another STeP for Highway 965

NORTH LIBERTY– Another large donation has been dropped in North Liberty’s bucket.
At its May 23 meeting, the Urbanized Area Policy Board of the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPOJC) voted to funnel another $735,000 to North Liberty for improving Highway 965.


Nature photography for youth

OXFORD– Capturing your favorite moment in nature isn’t always easy. Years of experience outdoors can help you capture those moments and learning from someone that has had years of experience enjoying nature is even better. The nature photography for youth class, to be held at the Conservation Education Center at F.W. Kent Park, on June 30 beginning at 8 a.m., will provide participants with an opportunity to learn from a local birder and naturalist, Rick Hollis who has spent years honing his skills observing nature and capturing those moments.

Spartans lose heartbreaker to CR Jeff

DAVENPORT– It was another week of hard lessons for the Solon varsity baseball team.
The Spartans went 2-4 over the last seven days on the road, sweeping a doubleheader from Vinton-Shellsburg, but losing a heartbreaker in extra innings to Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
The good news is that the offense has been coming to life– Solon scored fewer than five runs in only one of the games and scored in double-digits twice.
But wins have continued to be a premium.


Pesky Solon nettling ranked teams

SOLON– After what seems like a month on the road, the Solon varsity softball team returns home this week.
The last home game for the Lady Spartans was June 4.
Since then, the squad has been taking on the best teams in the state with mostly successful results. In the last week alone, Solon played the No. 6 team in Class 5A (Ottumwa), the No. 1 team in 4A (Clear Creek Amana) and the No. 4 team in Class 3A (Mid-Prairie), losing only to CCA as part of a four-game weekend at the CCA’s tournament in Tiffin.
