Solon Community Pantry has food for distribution

SOLON– The Solon Community Pantry has bread, eggs, meat, milk, fresh produce and many canned and packaged items available for families. Pantry hours are Mondays, 3-7 p.m. Individual appointments can be made by calling 319-333-6474 anytime to schedule an appointment between 1-3 p.m. on Mondays.
The many items available in the pantry can considerably reduce families’ food budgets and with school starting soon, many families will need to purchase school supplies.


Solon blood drive Aug. 18 at Methodist church

DAVENPORT– Solon United Methodist Church will host a community blood drive from 7:30 until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Solon United Methodist Church Family Life Center located at 122 N. West St., Solon.
To donate, please contact Chris Ciasto at 563-349-1608 for an appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome.


Free ice cream at brass band concert Thursday

SOLON– The City of Solon and the Solon Economic Development Group will be serving free ice cream at the Thursday, Aug. 2, performance of the Eastern Iowa Brass Band.
The performance is part of the Music on Main summer concert series, and will be held at the Solon United Methodist Church parking lot at 7 p.m.
The free ice cream will be provided as a thank you to residents for continuing to support Solon businesses during the city’s Main Street and Highway 1 construction projects.

I think it’s about time to talk some football.
After one of the hottest summers I can remember, I’m really looking forward to the cool October Saturday afternoons at Kinnick.
Media day is Monday, Aug. 6, so the next five weeks I’ll break down the schedule, talk about the offense, defense and special teams.
First off, the schedule, and Iowa has a good one.
The first game is away but the next four are at home and then comes a bye.
If the young Hawkeyes can grow up fast it could be a fun year.


Mary Jo Wilford

Mary Jo Wilford of Cranford, N.J., formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away at her home on Saturday, July 14, 2012.
Mary was born Oct. 29, 1938, to Herman and Agnes Gutmann of Lisbon.
Mary was an active member of the community she loved and resided in, Cranford, N.J.
She will be remembered as a loyal friend, activist, arts patron, mother, and Nana.
Local survivors include a daughter, Laura (Alan) Fisher of Solon and a son, Joe (Kristen) Wilford of Swisher.


Stephanie Truelson

Stephanie “Stevie” Truelson, 51, of Solon, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2012, at the Solon Care Center after an extended illness. A Memorial Gathering was held July 26 at Pinicon Ridge Park in Central City at Plains Camp Ground.


Irene Stallman

Irene Marie Stallman, 76, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Manor Care Health Services following a courageous battle with cancer and diabetes. Services were held July 26 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Norway, by the Rev. Craig Steimel. Burial was at St. Michael Cemetery.
Local survivors include her sister Mary Jane (Larry) Ockenfels of Swisher, and her brother, Marvin (Deanna) Stallman of Ely.


Mildred Smith

Mildred Gladys Smith, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at Rock Ridge Care Center, Shellsburg. Services were held July 27 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cedar Rapids. Burial was at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Mildred was born Jan. 2, 1919, near Belle Plaine, daughter of Charles and Julia Sikir. She lived in the area until moving to Cedar Rapids with her husband, Emory Smith. Mildred retired after 45 years with Smulekoff’s.
Local survivors include her granddaughter, Kelly (Alex) Pelzel of North Liberty.


Randy Rotzinger

Randy L. Rotzinger, 55, of North Liberty, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 24, 2012. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Randy’s life will be held from 3 until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Randy Rotzinger Memorial Fund.
