Solon Methodist Church hosts vacation Bible School July 29

SOLON– Come “FLY” at Vacation Bible School, Sunday, July 29 through Thursday, Aug. 2, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church (SUMC) Family Life Center. It is open to preschoolers through those that just finished fourth grade. At Sky, faith and imagination soar as kids discover that everything is possible with God.
Kids participate in memorable Bible-learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, make and dig into yummy treats, and experience electrifying Bible adventures.
The church is looking for volunteers to help out.


Bobby Kaufmann enlists Johnson County voters to send a message to Des Moines

SOLON— Last year’s redistricting process for Iowa State Representatives led to several changes from new districts being created to re-aligning existing ones. House District 73 is one that changed and now includes Solon, Lake Macbride, Morse, all of Cedar County and parts of rural Muscatine County. Four-term Representative Jeff Kaufmann introduced himself to the district in anticipation of a reelection bid this November. Earlier this year however, Kaufmann decided instead to leave the house at the end of this year’s session.


Solon Habitat home represents “prayers answered” for Shover family

SOLON- The Athenian poet, politician and lawmaker Solon (who lived in sixth-century B.C.), was one of the earliest reformers of debt, instituting a debt repudiation called Seisachtheia, which means to shake off the burden of debt.
Today, in Solon that tradition continues in the form of a community-built home that includes a donated roof (Metal Monsters), donated labor from friends, family and others in the community, and a zero-percent mortgage from Habitat for Humanity.
Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity will service the mortgage loan to Kurt and Vicki Shover.


City ready to close on candy store

SOLON– The City of Solon is ready to take possession of its new city hall.
But there were a couple of detours along the way.
The city made an offer to purchase 100 W. Main St. in May, and that offer was accepted. Subsequently, an environmental assessment of the site turned up significant amounts of asbestos, prompting the city to revise its offer in June.

SOLON– That first game was a close one.
Solon’s Lady Spartans survived a scare from Mount Vernon in the regional quarterfinal, then ran over Northeast Goose Lake and Independence on the way to a berth in the Class 3A state softball tournament.
Solon defeated Independence 10-0 Monday night in five innings, closing it out with a bases-loaded, run-scoring single by pinch hitter Shelby Gunnells.
Mel Breza and Emma Rickels had both reached on Indee errors in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Casey Musgrave had drawn a walk in between.

Eric May has had an on-and-off career for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
When he is on, he can make a human highlight film of great dunks on breakaway baskets.
When he is off, mostly because of injury, he isn’t playing, or if he is it’s not with the same explosiveness he has shown throughout his career.
Eric is the only senior on this year’s team and will lead by example. He is the only one left from his freshman class when Brendon Cougill and Cully Payne were on board.


Jean Strahl

Jean Ann (Tindell) Strahl, 73, of Guttenberg, died Monday, July 2, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
She was born Sept. 10, 1938, in Bagley, Wis., the daughter of Russell E. and Lucille (Fabert) Tindell. Jean attended elementary school in Clayton, and graduated from the Garnavillo High School. She later received her nursing degree from NICC. On June 20, 1959, Jean was united in marriage with Francis “Abe” Strahl at Peace Lutheran Church in Clayton. This union blessed them with three children.
Local survivors include a sister, Cindy (Doug) Rowland of Ely.


Mary Schloss

Mary “Pat” Schloss, 79, died of lung cancer Wednesday, June 27, 2012, surrounded by her family at her home in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass was held July 3 at St. Patrick’s Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Ivan Nienhaus. Her body was cremated and was inurned at Linwood Cemetery Cedar Rapids.
Local survivors include a son, Bradley (Suzanne) Schloss of North Liberty.


Martha Meade

Martha Genevieve Meade, associate superintendent of education for Jefferson Union High School District, was killed in a car accident in Minnesota on June 25, 2012. Born April 3, 1957, in Mt. Pleasant, Martha touched many lives, both through her 22-year career in public education and because of her outgoing personality and the caring, attentive way that she lived.
Local survivors include brother Richard of North Liberty.
