SOLON– The popular yoga classes in Solon are back. The four-week class will be held at the Timber DOME Lodge on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 18. For more information on the class, log on to www.solon-iowa.com and click on the parks and recreation tab. To reserve a spot in the class, please sign-up by Sept. 11.

SOLON– The Solon Community School District is pleased to announced the hiring of Peter Gustin as interim head varsity high school volleyball coach, pending school board approval. Peter is a 2010 graduate of the University of Iowa and 2006 graduate of Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort, Ill. Peter was a four year starter on the U of I Men’s Club Volleyball Team and Honorable Mention All-State in volleyball at Lincoln-Way East in 2006. Peter previously served as an assistant volleyball coach at Solon High School in 2010 and was an assistant at West Delaware in 2011.

SOLON- Kickoff is still set for 5:30 p.m., Aug. 24, against the Mount Vernon Mustangs in the first game to be played at the new, nearly-completed Spartan Stadium.
But a few items remain to be completed for the 3A-rated football arena and home of the Solon marching band, track and field, and soccer teams.
Thanks to some otherwise welcome rain, the construction schedule slowed and Solon will have to hold off on the fanfare and hoopla of a grand unveiling until Sept. 7, when the Solon footballers play the Panthers of Mt. Pleasant.

This is the second part of a preseason preview of Hawkeye football.
Last week, I looked at the offensive line, the tight ends, receivers and fullbacks.
This week I’ll break down the quarterbacks, the running backs and defensive line.
There is no doubt that James Vandenberg (6-3, 212) is the straw that stirs the drink on the Hawkeye football team.
James Ferentz leads the offensive line and Micah Hyde the defense, but the Hawks will go as far as Vandenberg leads the team.

Leoma Hasley Schmidt Zimmerli, 99, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehab Center. Services were held Aug. 15 at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, by the Rev. Dennis Juhl. Burial was at St. Michael Cemetery, Norway.
Local survivors include daughter-in-law, Nancy Schmidt of Solon.
Leoma was born May 19, 1913, in Norway, the daughter of Andrew and Minnie Brecht Hasley. Leoma and Clifford J. Schmidt were united in marriage in Minnesota. After his death, she married H.O. “Zip” Zimmerli in Atlanta, Ga.
