Edward Thomas

Edward W. “Ed” Thomas, 95, of Iowa City, died at his home Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012. Ed was well known in the Iowa City community and throughout the state of Iowa from careers in dairy herds and Duroc hogs to real estate and development.
Memorial services were held Aug. 18 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.


Charles N. (Chuck) Searles

Charles N. (Chuck) Searles died on Aug. 18, 2012, at his long-time West Union home, after a short battle with leukemia. He was born Nov. 10, 1922, near Boscobel, Wis., to Mildred (Glasbrenner) and Charles Searles, Sr. He was raised on his grandparents’ farm in Marietta Valley with his cousins and brother. Chuck graduated from Boscobel High School and attended the University of Wisconsin-Platteville where he played on a championship football team.


Harold Pagel

Harold Leslie Pagel, 96, passed away Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. Funeral Services were held Aug. 16 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama.
Harold was born on Nov. 6, 1915, in rural Tama. He was the fourth son born to August Joseph and Mary (Bahrenfuss) Pagel.
Harold and Darlene Violet Appelgate were united in marriage on Dec. 3, 1938, at the parsonage of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Darlene died May 5, 2006, at the age of 87.


Donald Langlas

Donald C. Langlas, 91, of Williamsburg, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, at the English Valley Care Center, North English. A Memorial Service was held Aug. 17 at First Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg, with the Rev. Kip Murphy officiating. A private family inurnment with military honors followed the service.
Memorials may be contributed to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Foundation, the Williamsburg Library or First Presbyterian Church.
Local survivors include his daughter Sandra Reed of North Liberty. Online condolences may be extended to the family at www.klosterfuneralhome.com.


Virgil Burmeister

Virgil Keith Burmeister, 85, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at Sunnycrest Nursing Home in Dysart after a short illness. Funeral services were held Aug. 13 at the Elberon United Methodist Church. Burial was in Dysart Cemetery.
Keith was born Jan. 16, 1927, in rural Elberon, the son of Henry and Minnie (Selk) Burmeister. He married Betty Fullmer on Jan. 27, 1951, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Keith farmed for 42 years until his retirement in 1996.

President Obama found himself in a pajama party of Republican bedfellows during a campaign stop at our state fair recently. The odd pairings of beach blanket bingo were brought about because Obama supports a renewal of subsidies for wind power generation.
It puts Obama in bed with none other than Republican President George H.W. Bush, who signed into law The Production Tax Credit (PTC) in 1992. Besides subsidizing wind, PTC also promoted other renewable energy sources including solar and geothermal.


Food For Thought

It was sometime in the ’60s. We were living in a big house in Iowa City’s Goosetown area. The house didn’t have central air conditioning, but my husband had bought one window unit for our bedroom– the justification being that he needed to have a good night’s sleep in order to be able to work the next day. The kids and I, he reasoned, spent most summer days out of doors anyway and, on really murderous days, we could go to the park for a swim in the pool, or splash in the spray from the hose in the back yard. He, on the other hand, had to stay in his office and work. His air conditioned office.

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Lions Club installed officers for 2012-2013 at the regular meeting Thursday, July 19, at 6:15 p.m. at the Pizza Ranch. Installing officer was Lions past international director Del Brown of Iowa City.


CCA Baseball Club tryouts Aug. 18

TIFFIN– The CCA Baseball Club will be holding tryouts for the 2013 baseball season Saturday, Aug. 18, (rain date Sunday, Aug. 19), and Sunday, Aug. 26, (no rain date) at the Tiffin ball fields.
Tryouts for 8U, 9U and 10U will be held from 10 a.m. until noon. Tryouts for 11U, 12U and 13U (14U to be determined) will be held from 1 until 3 p.m. Please arrive up to one hour early to register and warm up. Save time by preregistering at the club’s website, www.ccabaseballclub.org. Players will be allowed to attend both days and the highest of their total score will be utilized.


Five Clippers honored in Class 4A All-State Softball

DES MOINES– The Iowa Girls Coaches Association released their 2012 All-State Softball teams on Monday, July 30. Clear Creek Amana (CCA) was represented by five Clippers spread throughout the three teams. Caitlin Wnek and Fran Strub earned first team honors, Maliah Fligg and Mallory Madsen were named to the second team, and Tara Walls was placed on the third team listing.
