NL’s Boseneiler to head JC veterans commission

JOHNSON COUNTY– The Johnson County Veterans’ Affairs Commission has a new, full-time leader.
For the time being, anyway.
At least one Johnson County supervisor is hesitant to bring another full-time employee aboard, equating a salary increase to a tax increase for Johnson County taxpayers.

Legion spaghetti supper fundraiser Sept. 19

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will hold an all-you-can-eat spaghetti supper on Wednesday, Sept. 19, serving from 4:30 until 7 p.m., at the Legion hall.
The cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children, and children under five eat free.
The all-you-can-eat meal includes spaghetti, homemade sauce, French bread, green toss salad, assorted dressings, homemade desserts, milk and lemonade.
Proceeds are for merit awards for Solon 2013 graduating seniors.


Solon Legion fundraiser breakfast Sept. 16

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will hold a breakfast on Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Legion hall from 7 a.m. until noon.
The cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children (6-12), and 5 and under are free for all-you-care-to-eat pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, juice, coffee and milk.
All proceeds go to the Legion’s new interior painting and renovations.


St. Mary Church Harvest Festival Sept. 30

SOLON– Saint Mary Catholic Church will hold a Harvest Festival on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the church. A pork and chicken dinner will be served at a cost of $10 for adults and $6 for children aged 6 through 12. Tickets will be sold after weekend Mass or during the week at church. Carry out is available.
The Harvest Festival includes dinner, family and children activities, a country store and a silent auction.


Fund Run Sept. 15

SOLON– The next Spartan Fund Run is Saturday, Sept. 15, with start times at 8 a.m. for half mile and one mile; 8:30 a.m. start for 5K, 10K and teams.
Running rain or shine.
Registration available on the school website or getmeregistered.com. Registrations will also be taken the same day as the race. Food/drink and prizes/medals after the race. Prices vary, but are on the registration form.


City approves brewery’s $125k forgivable loan

SOLON– “We’ll try to make you very proud,” Faye Swift told council members last week.
Swift and her son Matt have been working on plans for a Main Street microbrewery in Solon, and at a Sept. 5 meeting, Solon City Council members threw most of their support behind the project.
The city has amended its urban renewal plan to include the project and has pledged $125,000 in forgivable loans toward its completion. Those actions were approved at the Sept. 5 meeting, as well as the addition of “microbrewery” as an acceptable use in Solon’s commercially zoned properties.

Hawk Talk

For the second week in a row the Hawkeye offense couldn’t find the end zone, but the defense kept them in it until the end. It wasn’t enough, and the Iowa State Cyclones held on for a 9-6 win.
I don’t get it. The defense is supposed to be rebuilding and the offense has a senior quarterback, a new offensive coordinator, a solid line and an All-American tight end, but scores only one touchdown in two games!
Going into the game, Iowa was 40-0 with Kirk Ferentz as head coach when they held a team to under 10 points.


Henrietta Shramek

Henrietta Louise Shramek, 81, of Swisher, left this world on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. Louise’s wishes were to be cremated and have private family graveside services at Blain Cemetery, rural Swisher.
