Overpowered

IOWA CITY– It was just too much.
Iowa City Regina powered past Solon 31-7 Friday night, dropping the Spartans to 1-1 on the young football season.
Untimely penalties and turnovers plagued Solon throughout the evening, perhaps evidenced best by the closing minutes of the second quarter.
Up to that point, Solon’s defense had kept it close, while the offense had been stagnant.
The Spartans were trailing 10-0, but they had the ball and had strung together a few first downs, driving all the way to the Regina 15-yard-line.


Spartans to dedicate stadium Friday night

SOLON– The team rooms are done, the dedication ceremony is set, and the pillars and plaques are in place. Spartan Stadium will be officially open for business this Friday as the Spartan football team faces the Mount Pleasant Panthers.
Former Spartan coach Ed Hansen will return to recognize his namesake press box in a ceremony that will also thank a couple dozen of the most important stadium stakeholders, organizers, and donors, including a $400,000 donation from the Gerdin family of North Liberty.


Solon KCs raise funds for Habitat house

The Solon Knights of Columbus would like to thank the community and the major sponsors for supporting the Solon Knights of Columbus Golf outing July 7. This year the $1,300 net proceeds all went to Habitat for Humanity which is building a home in Solon. The Knights made an additional $700 contribution from previous fundraising efforts. Major sponsors of the event included Billion Automotive, Lake MacBride Golf Club and Calloway Golf. The Knights would like to congratulate the winning foursome, Paul Mazzacco, Mike Sattler, Jack Evans and Dan Johnson.

“A Separation” (2011, PG-13, Drama) A married Iranian couple are faced with a difficult decision– to improve the life of their 11-yr-old daughter by moving to another country or to stay in Iran and look after a deteriorating parent who has Alzheimer’s disease. This film was nominated for two Academy Awards last year and won the award for Best Foreign Film.


Opening hours change

The beginning of September means the library returns to regular hours. Beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 4, regular library hours resumed, which means the library will not open until noon on most week days. Regular library hours are: Mon.-Thu., noon-8 p.m., Fri.-Sat. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The library is closed on Sunday.

“A New Farmer’s Story” Sept. 8 at Solon field day

SOLON– Starting out in farming unquestionably takes a lot of work, dedication and planning– but success does not solely depend on having a family farming background, inherited land or even a degree in agriculture.
That’s the message Kate Edwards, a beginning farmer now entering her second year operating Wild Woods Farm, hopes to share with attendees at a Practical Farmers of Iowa field day she is hosting, Saturday, Sept. 8, from 1 until 4 p.m., near Solon. The event is sponsored by the Johnson County Soil and Water Conservation District, and is free to attend.


Cool school, new gym floor and more updates at SMS

SOLON- Middle schoolers may have noticed a few updates at their almost-100 year-old Solon school building (built in 1917). A summer facility update, concurrent with a high school stadium project and an elementary school expansion, has caught the middle school back up to this century in many ways.
The whole thing started after a donation put some light on the situation.
As school superintendent Sam Miller wrote on his blog (scsdsuperintendent.blogspot.com), “Once the new lights were installed, it provided improved illumination of a facility that was in dire need of a renovation.”


Burma-Shave signs return to Solon

SOLON– Between 1925 and 1963, 7,000 witty signs hawking Burma-Shave were deployed along the highways of the United States. As four-lane super highways and the interstate system pulled traffic off of the once busy two-lane roads, the advertising campaign ceased. The ravages of time and collectors took their toll as many of the signs disappeared from sight. Occasionally, some can still be seen. An original set stands just south of Clarence as an example.
However, just outside of Solon, a time warp has occurred as a fresh set appeared earlier this summer.


Solon KCs breakfast coming Sunday, Sept. 9

SOLON– The Solon Knights of Columbus will hosting a breakfast Sunday, Sept. 9, from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church parish hall. The cost is $6 for ages 12 and up, $3 for ages six through 12, and free for ages 6 and younger. Omelets are available upon request.


HS band to perform at Wartburg game Sept. 8

WAVERLY– Solon High School’s marching band will perform at the Wartburg College v. Bethel (Minn.) University football game Sept. 8.
The marching band will perform the national anthem and during halftime of the game. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. in Walston-Hoover Stadium.
Solon High School parents, family and friends can attend the game for half price ($3 per person) by indicating they are a Solon supporter.
Wartburg College has invited Iowa high school marching bands to perform at each home game this fall.
