Thomas Wolfe

Thomas “Tom” L. Wolfe, 85, of Solon, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. A Celebration of Life was held on Sept. 14 at Lake Macbride Golf Course.


Wilma Thomas

Wilma M. Thomas, 95, of Tipton, died peacefully at 1:38 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at Mechanicsville Nursing Rehab Center. Funeral services were held Sept. 17 at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton, with the Rev. Ron Lashmit officiating. Burial followed in Memory Gardens, Iowa City.

Daughter of Fred Z. and Mary C. Vondracek Lukavsky, Wilma was born Nov. 12, 1916, in Riverside. She was united in marriage to Vernon Dale Thomas on April 20, 1939, in Riverside. Wilma was a homemaker and a childcare provider.

Gwendolyn (Trout) Stone, 83, of Solon, died peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, with her family beside her.


Ruth Ruprecht

Ruth M. Ruprecht, 104, of Clarence, died Sept. 9, 2012, at the Mechanicsville Nursing and Rehab Center. Funeral Services were held Sept. 12 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Stanwood, with the Rev. Jordan McKinley officiating. Burial was in Lowden Cemetery.
Born July 8, 1908, in Chicago, the daughter of Bernard and Clara Mueller, she married George “Jack” Ruprecht there on May 26, 1934. Ruth and George moved to Clarence in 1940 and had their one child, Gar, on Oct. 11, 1941.
Ruth was a lifetime dedicated St. Paul’s Lutheran Church worker and was also active in Vacation Bible School.


Dorothy Joslin

Dorothy F. Joslin, 89, of North Liberty, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral Services were held Sept. 12 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial followed at Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Dorothy was born Nov. 4, 1922, in Oxford Junction. Dorothy loved to read and play bingo and puzzles.


Walkin'

We left the Great Allegheny Passage on our second day, picked up the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (C&O) as we rolled out of Cumberland, Md. (home to the city-wide happy hour every Friday night) and headed eventually to Washington, D.C.
We had the odd fortune of bicycling every day with rain predicted but never felt a drop until the seventh. On that day no rain was expected but we rode thru a steady drizzle, sat out one shower and rode through another. Nevertheless, every day of the first week was hot and very humid.


Food For Thought

My paternal grandmother, who was a teenage immigrant from Germany, never wasted food (or anything else I can think of). I remember watching with awe when she ate an apple. She didn’t peel it and discard the skin. She didn’t even twist off the stem and leave it behind. There was certainly no core to dispose of when she was finished. She ate everything– including the seeds.

ICAT helps CCA board plan for the future

OXFORD– In May of this year, Kent Pilcher and Ric Parades of the Iowa Construction Advocate Team (ICAT)/Estes Construction presented a multi-step matrix to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School Board of Directors. The plan was a suggested guideline to help the board determine future facility needs, and a roadmap toward a future bond referendum to pay for them.

TIFFIN– It took five games to do it, but the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball squad got the best of the Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana. The Creek girls won 3-2, improving their record to 5-2-0.


West volleyball soars over Jefferson J-Hawks

IOWA CITY– If West High coach Kathy Bresnahan were to fill out a report card for her Women of Troy varsity volleyball team at this point in the season, it would likely contain the words “not working up to their potential.”
The team took care of visiting Cedar Rapids Jefferson Tuesday night in three games, in convincing fashion: 25-12, 25-11 and 25-11; but the coach was not happy with what she saw out on the floor.
