SCSD professional development

Solon Community School District (SCSD) staff members regularly engage in their own learning during 1 p.m. early dismissals. Staff development time is an opportunity for individuals and teams to focus on areas in which our data indicates we could do a better job helping students learn essential concepts and skills. In order to monitor our own progress, a website was created at the beginning of the 2010 to 2011 academic year. The SCSD professional development website has received multiple updates and revisions over the past year.


Kindergarten planning changes

Kindergarten Roundup will be held on Friday, April 13, 2012, at Lakeview Elementary so we are in the process of collecting the names of children in the Solon Community School District who will be attending kindergarten in the fall of 2012. Children must turn five by Sept. 15, 2012, to be eligible to enroll in kindergarten.
If you have a child who will attend kindergarten next fall collecting information is going to be a little different this year.

Swiss steak, mashed potatoes w/LS gravy, broccoli Normandy, fruit cup, chocolate pudding.

Thursday, Jan 5:
Beefy macaroni casserole, Oregon bean medley, mixed green salad w/assorted dressings, garlic breadsticks, citrus gelatin salad. BINGO.

Friday, Jan 6:
Swedish meatballs w/egg noodles, Scandinavian veggies, creamy cuke salad, diced cantaloupe. Cards.

Monday, Jan 9:
Spaghetti w/LS meat sauce, green beans, spinach Mandarin salad w/dressings, garlic breadstick, bananas and oranges.

• The Hangover, Part II (2011, R, Comedy) Two years after the bachelor party in Las Vegas (2009’s “The Hangover”), Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug jet to Thailand for Stu’s wedding. Stu’s plan for a subdued pre-wedding brunch, however, goes seriously awry.
• Midnight in Paris (2011, PG-13, Romantic/Comedy/Fantasy) Romantic comedy about a family traveling to the French capital for business. The party includes a young engaged couple forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is better. Starring Owen Wilson.  This film has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards.*


Here come the calves

January is the kick-off for the second annual Calf Classic sponsored by the Solon Library Foundation. The Calf Classic Project pairs sponsors and artists to create a uniquely decorated fiberglass calf sculpture. Decorated calves are entered in the Beef Days Parade and are auctioned to the highest bidder at the conclusion of the Beef Days celebration.


Teen Final Fridays Café

The newly formed Teen Advisory Board (TAB) will host Final Fridays Cafe at the library for high school and middle school students on the last Friday of the month from January through May.  Students can come after school to meet their friends and enjoy a casual time of conversation and refreshments.  Hot chocolate, coffees, teas, cookies and other treats will be offered for a small fee.  In January, there will be a free raffle ticket given with each purchase. Raffle prize for January will be a homemade cake to the lucky winner.


Posters for sale

If you enjoy Toni’s display windows, why not pick up a poster as a memento of some of her previous works? Framed posters “Of Time and Place” are currently on display at the library. The posters are real conversation starters and fit nicely into a room filled with nostalgia or an entryway. Cost is $10 for unframed posters or $25 for framed posters. Posters may be purchased at the library or ordered by emailing SolonLibrFriends @aol.com or call Sue at 319-624-2632.


Special after school program Jan. 13

On Friday, Jan. 13, the Teen Advisory Board (TAB) will be hosting a free family event playing a life-sized Candy Land game in the meeting room from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Plan to join the fun as you become a real live game piece on the life size Candy Land board. It will be most popular with kindergarten through fourth grades but any age is welcome to participate. This event will celebrate the conclusion of Toni Russo’s latest window display, Candy Land, which will be on display until Jan. 14. 


Early out movie

The next early out program will be Thursday, Jan. 5. The heartwarming movie “Dolphin Tale (rated PG),” about Winter, a dolphin who lost her tail will be showing in the meeting room.  Movie time will be from 1-3 p.m.  Fun and free early-out activities are for all Solon students. There is no registration. Children under the age of 10 attending the movie need to be picked up by parents or caregivers at 3 p.m.
