Solon Habitat for Humanity Christmas tree winners

SOLON– Solon Community Habitat for Humanity tree winners for 2011 are: First Place: “Nature’s Splendor” by Margo Redlinger. Second Place: “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” by Ellison Insurance Agency, Inc. Third Place “Victorian Christmas” by Elissa Lewis. The trees were judged by the Habitat family of Kurt and Vicki Shover.
The Solon community voted on the Humanity Award in which “Totally ‘80s” by MacBride’s Pride 4-H Club won. 
The Solon Community Habitat for Humanity thanks all the contestants, library staff and everybody else for support of this event.


Solon Habitat for Humanity to plan for 2012 build Jan. 8

SOLON– The family of Kurt and Victoria Shover has been selected as the recipient of the Solon Community Habitat for Humanity house to be built in 2012 at 413 S. Dubuque St. in Solon. A meeting will take place at the Solon United Methodist Church Family Life Center on Sunday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m. to set goals and create a plan to raise funds for the build. A groundbreaking ceremony is to be held in May. This is a community project and all are welcome to attend.


Firefighters to speak at Jan. 11 Senior Advocates meal

SOLON– Members of the Solon Fire Department will provide information about the Knox Box program, first responders and the importance of smoke detectors at the Wednesday, Jan. 11, sponsored meal at the Old Gold Diner. The meal will be sponsored by Solon Senior Advocates. Call 624-2251 for reservations by Tuesday, Jan. 10.


Discarded Christmas trees picked up Jan. 6 & 13

The City of Solon will be picking up Christmas trees Friday, Jan. 6, and Friday, Jan. 13.  Please place trees at the curb by 7 a.m. those days. 


Solon family will welcome Habitat home

SOLON– Everyone should have a simple, decent, affordable place to call home.
Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity (IVHH) is going to help make it happen for a Solon family this year.
An affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry, the Iowa Valley chapter has selected the Kurt, Vicki and Chanse Shover family to become the first Habitat partner family for a home to be built in Solon during the summer of 2012.


New council member to be appointed

SOLON– An applicant for the position will be chosen tonight.
A new member for the Solon City Council will be appointed at a Jan. 4 meeting to fill the vacated seat of Mayor-elect Cami Rasmussen.
Rasmussen is expected to be sworn into office Tuesday morning, Jan. 3, creating an opening for which Jesse Ehlinger, Chuck Panzer and Duane TePoel have applied.


County to consider special events permit

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Planning and Zoning Department (P&Z) has written new code for landowners hosting special events.
Up to 12 temporary outdoor activities, like music festivals, theatrical exhibitions, speeches or other entertainment, will be allowed per calendar year on properties zoned Agricultural, Residential, and split Ag/Residential.
The new permitting process places the burden on the applicant to publish a schedule before receiving a Multiple Special Events permit.

Hawk Talk

I wasn’t real excited when Iowa found out it would go to the Insight Bowl and play Oklahoma.
The Sooners were ranked No. 1 in the preseason polls and even though they lost their top receiver and running back, I knew they would be a tough match for the Hawkeyes.
Vegas thought the same thing and favored Oklahoma by 14.
The Hawks were underdogs last year by 12 when they played Missouri but Marcus Coker was eligible to play.
When I found out he was suspended for the game…
I’m also not a big fan of football games starting at 9 p.m.!


Dorothy Short

Dorothy Short, 87, beloved mother and grandmother, passed into her Savior’s arms while surrounded by family on Dec. 22, 2011, at the Solon Care Center. A celebration of her life was held Dec. 28 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial followed at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
She was born Oct. 11, 1924, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Earl and Marian (Hickey) Bennett and grew up in Ely. She lived in numerous Midwest towns but primarily raised her family in the Marengo and central Iowa areas.
