CCA board looks at construction project methods

TIFFIN– By consensus of the group, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School District Board of Directors settled a decision eight months in the making.
Since May of last year, the board has been mulling over two distinctly different ways of conducting a major building construction project: the traditional way, and Integrated Project Delivery, or IPD.


Switching SEATS ?

Supervisors counting on cities to help fund service

IOWA CITY– Contracts with Iowa City and Coralville for the county-wide para-transit bus service, SEATS, will expire at the end of June. But Johnson County supervisors have already decided they want to end their subsidy of the service.
The program provides riders around the county with door-to-door transport and anyone outside the city limits of Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty and University Heights can request a ride that comes with a half-hour window for pick-ups.

NL council previews FY14 budget

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty officials had a first look at the fiscal year 2014 draft budget, and the city’s property tax levy is expected to remain the same.
However, proposed increases in water and sewer rates and an increased rollback from the state likely means more will come out of residents’ pockets anyway.


Solon wrestlers take second place at CPU dual meet

CENTER POINT– The Solon varsity wrestling team turned in a solid performance with a second place finish at the Center Point Dual Meet Tournament held this past Saturday. The team won three meets and lost two in the round-robin format.
Scores were as follows:
Solon 38, New London 42
Solon 64, Clayton Ridge 12
Solon 26, CPU 52
Solon 43, Oelwein 33
Solon 46, Mid Prairie 30


Rebound at Maquoketa

Lady Spartans fall to Anamosa, Regina

SOLON– Solon’s girls rebounded after a disappointing loss at Anamosa, but the Lady Spartans dropped to 8-7 overall after going 1-3 on the week.
Finishing off a stretch where six of seven games were on the road, the Lady Spartans traveled to Maquoketa for a win before hosting Iowa City Regina Saturday and losing to the leaders of the Cedar Valley Conference, 51-45.
At Anamosa Tuesday night, Solon’s girls continued to struggle with offensive output. The Lady Spartans shot 30 percent from the field and 54 percent from the line, with no players in double figures in the 40-38 loss.


Spartans rally against Regina

SOLON– It’s not easy being consistent.
After battling a tough Anamosa team tooth and toenail, Solon’s varsity basketball squad fell prey to the Cardinals of Maquoketa last week, collecting a third loss on the season before surging back against Iowa City Regina the next night.
The Spartans moved to 10-3 overall last week, solidifying their position behind Western Dubuque on the top of the WaMaC East heap.
Solon used a 23-point fourth quarter to push past Anamosa at home last Tuesday, taking a 56-48 victory from a hungry Raider team.


Gateway Rotary to host Ely soup supper Feb. 1

ELY– Gateway Rotary is holding their annual Soup Supper on Friday, Feb. 1, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Prairie High School cafeteria. Come and enjoy great chili or chicken noodle soup while listening to the Jasmine Band. There will also be a huge bake sale and free door prize drawings throughout the evening. Raffle tickets can be purchased before or during the event. Proceeds go to support projects like Prairie Edge K-12 and Alternative HS, PrairieWood Transition Center, Pages For Hope and area community projects. Tickets can be purchased in advance by going to www.gatewayrotary.org.


District agrees to start school Aug. 20, 2013

SOLON– Graduation day will fall on May 18, 2014, and school will start on Aug. 20, 2013, as the Solon school board passed next year’s calendar at its January meeting.
Board members also asked a calendar committee for different start date options for 2014-2015 and 2015-2016. The committee will also look at building in some snow days during the school year to avoid a late start to summer vacations.
For high school principal Nathan Wear, “It’s not so much the early start. It’s ending the semester by (winter) break.”


Hacking away at budget

Used leaf vacuum to save city thousands

SOLON– Snip, snip, snip.
In just over a week, the members of the Solon City Council hacked approximately $170,000 from the projected 2013-2014 budget.
In a special meeting Jan. 9, and again during a regular session last week, the city took the scissors to non-essential budget requests, attempting to narrow the gap with an unanticipated drop in valuation for the upcoming fiscal year.


Solon softball/baseball teams can drive Feb. 9

SOLON– The Solon High School softball and baseball programs are conducting a can drive on Feb. 9 from 1 until 5 p.m. to raise money for an indoor hitting facility project.
The goal is to eventually build or rehab a shed on district property that can be used year round (but primarily during the winter months) for indoor hitting and throwing training for softball and baseball players. Softball and baseball players will be going door to door to collect cans/bottles.
