SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates will host the monthly Meal & a Movie Friday, Jan. 25.
“The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” is a fantasy drama Walt Disney Pictures film about a magical pre-adolescent boy whose personality and naïveté have profound effects on the people of a drought-stricken town in North Carolina. Solon KCs free-throw championship on Jan. 27

SOLON– All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2013 Knights of Columbus (KC) Free Throw Championship. The local KC Council #12129 competition will be held on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m. at the Solon High School.


Optimist Club basketball contests Sunday, Jan. 27

SOLON– The Optimist Club of Solon will hold basketball contests, including dribbling, passing and shooting, on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 12:30 p.m., at the Solon Middle School gym.
The categories are ages eight through 13, boys and girls divisions. First, second and third place awards are presented to each age group, along with boys and girls champion awards.

Dollars for Scholars seeking stuffed animals

SOLON– Please donate any stuffed animals you no longer want to Solon Dollars for Scholars for the spring carnival. They can be dropped off at the Solon Public Library before Feb. 20.


‘Generation Change’ is coming to Solon UMC

SOLON– Dave Ramsey’s new program for high school students and young adults is designed to lead teens to a better understanding of God, themselves and their money– and how it all works together. The program highlights themes of what scripture says about finances, creating a budget, and being debt-free. Classes will be held at Solon United Methodist Church on Saturday Feb. 2, 9, and 16, from 1 until 4 p.m. The cost is $26 and includes a workbook for each lesson. Chris Street remembered

I doesn’t seem like it was 20 years ago last Saturday that Chris Street died in an auto accident.
The Hawkeyes honored Chris by beating Wisconsin, the only undefeated team left in the Big Ten, 70-66, before a jam-packed, very loud and excited crowd.
I remember that night of the accident 20 years ago as I was sitting at home watching TV around 7:30 p.m.
I got a call from Deanna Slade, who was a neighbor of mine.
Deanna asked me, “Is there a football player named Chris Street?”
I said, “No, he plays basketball.”


Lloyd Petersen

Lloyd T. Petersen, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at his home in Anamosa after an extended illness. A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
Local survivors include his son, Brad (Janet) of North Liberty.
Lloyd T. Petersen was born April 24, 1928, to Nellie and Dewey Petersen in Martelle. He married Betty Kernen on July 1, 1950, and they lived in Monticello, Stanwood and Wyoming before settling in Anamosa.


Nancy Noel

Nancy A. Noel, 59, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at Mercy Hospice following a courageous battle with emphysema. The family celebrated Nancy’s life on Jan. 17 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Nancy was born Feb. 16, 1953, in Dubuque, the daughter of James and Hazel Read Philpot. She was raised in Elizabeth, Ill., where she graduated from Elizabeth High School. Nancy attended Cornell College.

Joost Adrian Korpel, 54, of Iowa City, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Celebration of Life Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Solon, with Reverend Carol Kress and Reverend Laura Guy presiding.
