Yellow doesn’t mean stop

DOT agrees to removal of flashing yellow at Highway 1 and Main Street

SOLON– A yellow traffic signal means to proceed with caution.
Not enough people traveling Highway 1 through Solon have been able to grasp the concept.
The Solon City Council last week agreed to proceed with a project funded by an Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) grant which will remove the flashing yellow lights which stretch across the Highway 1 intersection of with Main Street.

Supervisors fail to find consensus on justice center

IOWA CITY– A Johnson County Board of Supervisors work session on Monday, Oct. 14, was meant to determine the next steps toward finding a courthouse and jail proposal voters would approve.
Instead of consensus there was conflict, and after more than three hours of discussion, the five members decided to step back and try again at a later date.

Keeping it local

Salt Fork Kitchen making organic food affordable

“There’s such a bountiful harvest of so many wonderful things right around us, and people still want to go to the store and buy something that comes from a spinach farm in California, or this or that when they could be buying locally.” - Jay Schworn

SOLON– Jay Schworn and Eric Menzel share a philosophy, and they’d like to share it with you, served-up fresh, hot and tasty.

Progress?

Hawk Talk

By Don Lund
Sports Writer

I know the Hawkeyes lost to Ohio State Saturday at Columbus, 34-24, but they hung with the fourth-ranked Buckeyes and it was all tied up 24-24 at the start of the fourth quarter.
I’m not into moral victories, but I thought Iowa played its best half of football all year when they led 17-10 at halftime.
Ed Podolak, who is Iowa’s radio color commentary, said it was the best half of football the Hawks have played in three years.
I like Ed’s assessment better.

The mysterious building

Walkin'

You’d think that between pot smoking, whiskey-drinking gnomes on one side, and ghost trains on the other, that the apartment complex I mow has more than its fair share of paranormal activity.
Think again.

The world turns

Food for Thought

About three weeks ago, I woke up one morning to find my whole world had shifted over into fall. That process isn’t usually so abrupt, but this year it hit like a two-by-four on the side of my head. Wow. Summer was over. When I was a kid, the seasons somehow managed to creep up on me when I wasn’t paying much attention. For instance, spring seemed to linger until sometime around the Fourth of July, and winter didn’t set in until the first really serious snowfall– Christmas not withstanding.

A kiss to say I love ewe

Katherine G. is not sheepish when it comes to making new friends. She and her family visited Colony Pumpkin Patch on Oct. 5 to enjoy the patch’s annual Fall Festival. This small petting zoo was just one of the many activities and attractions at the event. Colony Pumpkin Patch on Front Street in North Liberty, with its ready-picked or pick-your-own pumpkins and giant corn maze will remain open through Halloween, weather permitting.
