Solon Public Library

Halloween party review

The library’s Halloween party for children is always one of its most popular programs and this year, we experienced record-breaking attendance. We had 438 people participating in crafts, games, refreshments, and, of course, trick-or-treating. Morgan Meiers got even more of those treats as the winner of the jar of Tootsie Rolls, with her guess of 230 coming closest to the mystery jar’s 232 pieces.

Contractors, city can’t agree on compromise

By Doug Lindner
Solon Economist

SOLON– Things are not going swimmingly between the City of Solon and its contractors for the 2012 Main Street improvement project.
The city is not satisfied with the asphalt paving portion of the project and has sought an independent evaluation. The contractors have argued the job was delayed by Beef Days, pushing the paving into cooler months, and that the work met the requirements of the contract.

Earth moved for new playground location

City not waiting for permission to divert FEMA funds

SOLON– It’s time to put Randall Park back together.
At last week’s meeting, members of the Solon City Council voted to finance the relocation of playground equipment at Randall Park with the expectation that federal funds will cover much of the cost.
The park has been inactive most of the year after spring floods wiped out the sand volleyball court and scoured away playground surfaces.

Early injuries for Hawkeye hoops

By Don Lund
Sports Writer

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams opened last weekend and both had major injuries.
Let’s start with the women, who won their first two games.
Nicole Smith only got to play three minutes in the exhibition opener before she hurt her knee. She will miss 10-14 weeks after having surgery last Friday.
Coach Lisa Bluder said Nicole worked hard in the off season, was in great shape and ready to help the Hawkeyes inside as she is the tallest player on the team at 6-4.
That leaves nine scholarship players.

Bowl committee

Hawk Talk

By Don Lund
Sports Writer

The Hawkeyes exercised some demons Saturday in their 38-14 win at Purdue.
First of all, they became bowl-eligible with their sixth victory. It seems like they haven’t gone bowling in years even though it was just last year that they missed a bowl game.
Second, the rushing attack, which has been shut down the last couple of weeks, exploded for 318 yards (a season high and the most rushing yards since Iowa had 365 in 2002 against Minnesota).
