Lady Spartans play top WaMaC teams tough

SOLON– Sometimes, a loss can feel okay.
Even though the short-handed Lady Spartans didn’t come away with a win last week against Mount Vernon and Western Dubuque, they gave the two top teams in the conference a run for the money.
With different starters sidelined for each of the home varsity matchups, the girls dropped to 10-10 on the season with a single game remaining.

Spartans stymie Mustangs, 52-31

SMOUNT VERNON– It was the best game of the year defensively, said head coach Brad Randall.
The Solon varsity boys dismantled the Mount Vernon Mustangs, 52-31, last Tuesday (Jan. 30), their only game of the week.
But the Spartans have a full slate this week, including senior night hosting Dyersville Beckman Feb. 6 and road trips to West Branch and Williamsburg Thursday and Friday.
In Mount Vernon, Solon held the Mustangs to 13 first-half points and led 44-23 at the end of three quarters.

Solon library closing for upgrade Feb. 8

New features, more interaction with new circulation software

SOLON– It’s time for an upgrade.
The Solon Public Library will be closed Friday, Feb. 8, to allow for training on a new software system that will streamline and update the library experience for patrons and staff.
The current circulation and management software programming is almost a decade old, more like a century in terms of recent technology advances, and its replacement will provide a host of options.
“We’ve got a lot to learn yet,” library director Kris Brown said Friday. “I think overall it will be easier and users can interact more with it.”

Hawkeye Wrestling
The Hawkeye wrestlers took down the Nittany Lions, 22-16, last Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
What a great meet!
What a great crowd (15,000-plus)!
What a great win!
It’s been three years since the Hawkeyes won the Big Ten Championship and the NCAA title.
Iowa has one loss this year to Oklahoma State, but is the only unbeaten team left in the Big Ten.
Matt McDonough, Derek St. John and Mike Evans won one-point matches, Tony Ramos got a pin and Mark Ballweg got a major to lead the Hawkeyes.


Donald Donovan

Donald Donovan, 88, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Windmill Manor following a brief illness. Funeral Services were held Jan. 28 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, with Father Thomas Doyle officiating. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Don was born April 28, 1924, in Graham Township near Solon, the son of Raymond and Mary Lena Dewey Donovan. Don farmed with his father and brother on the family farm west of Iowa City. Following the death of his mother, Don lived at Chatham Oaks for 17 years, later moving to Windmill Manor. Don liked to fish, play bingo and do craftwork.


Leslie Pedersen

Leslie “Les” A. Pedersen, 92, of West Branch, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Crestview Nursing and Rehab Center in West Branch.
Funeral services were held Jan. 28 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Branch. Burial was at Honey Grove Cemetery.

Charles Steinbeck

Charles “Charlie” Lee Steinbeck, 80, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at the Solon Care Center.
A Memorial Service celebrating Charles’ life was held Jan. 30 at Grace Lutheran Church in DeWitt, with the Rev. Rafferty officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Calamus.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Grace Lutheran Camp c/o Grace Lutheran Church or to Iowa City Hospice.
Charles was born March 26, 1932, in Calamus, the son of Herbert and Margaret Roseland Steinbeck. He attended school in Calamus. On Dec. 7, 1949, Charles married Janis Davisson in Davenport.


Marilyn Jean Swails

Marilyn Jean Swails, 85, longtime resident of Coralville, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, under the compassionate care of Mercy Hospice. Funeral services were held Feb. 1 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with burial following at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
