Online registration now available for parks and recreation

SOLON– The Solon Parks and Recreation Department now offers registration software that allows parents to sign their son or daughter up for programs online. Parents now have the option to pay by credit card or debit card online or by cash or check through the city office. This option will allow people to register at home or at work thus making it more convenient for the customer. To register for Solon Recreation activities visit https://solon-iowa.cogran.com/.
Recreation baseball, softball and spring soccer is now open.


Methodist youth group collecting non-perishables for Pine Ridge Reservation

SOLON– Youth members of Solon United Methodist Church are on a mission to do good.
Team Mission will be canvassing Solon neighborhoods this Sunday afternoon, Feb. 24, collecting nonperishable food items to be taken to the residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation at Wanblee, SD.  


12U Sluggers planning extreme 5k March 9

SOLON– The Solon Sluggers 12U baseball team is organizing a fundraiser for its baseball team.  The Sluggers are in the process of organizing the Solon Survivor Extreme 5k on March 9 at 9 a.m. This is an “off the grid” race full of obstacles, water and hills.  Look for details in next week’s paper.


Dahms to hold candidate event Feb. 22 in Solon

SOLON– Terry Dahms, a candidate for the open seat on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, will host a “Meet Me” event from 7 to 8 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, at Savvy Coffee & Wine Bar in Solon.


Senior Advocates seek community input on purchase of new van

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates want to replace their aging 10 passenger van with a larger 25 passenger bus. In order to justify the purchase and attendant expenses, the group feels it should be available to various community organizations and groups. It will be necessary to schedule fee-based usage from others in addition to the Advocate’s senior trips in order to justify the purchase.


Trapshooting team can drive Saturday, Feb. 23

SOLON– The Solon trapshooting team is about to kick off another season. The team will be holding a can drive on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., and the drop-off point will again be the North Liberty American Legion (Club 76), one mile out of North Liberty, going toward Solon on Mehaffey Bridge Road.

Solon Dollars for Scholars ‘Bringing in the Green’ carnival March 3

SOLON– Attention juniors and seniors: The Solon Dollars for Scholars “Bringing in the Green” carnival will be held on Sunday, March 3, at the Lakeview large gym. Dollars for Scholars needs juniors, seniors and their parents to help make the carnival a success again this year. All the money raised will be used for scholarships for the Solon graduating class of 2013. Sign-up sheets are in the high school office or contact Denise Moses at 319-331-3507 for more information.

Severance package approved for North Liberty’s former police chief

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty’s former police chief has accepted a severance package after his abrupt departure from the city’s employ Feb. 1.
The North Liberty City Council unanimously approved a resignation agreement between the city and former North Liberty Police Chief Jim Warkentin at the council’s Feb. 12 meeting. The agreement grants Warkentin $37,647.46 for severance pay, overtime and paid time off due as of his departure date of Feb. 1, as well as providing insurance benefits until March 31, 2013.

Early pricing for concept plan causes sticker shock for Solon officials

SOLON– After a bout with sticker shock, it’s back to the drawing board for Solon’s proposed new city hall.
Early conceptual cost estimates for the renovation of 100 W. Main St. came in at nearly three times the amount the city expected to spend, according to city administrator Cassandra Lippincott.
That was a month ago, and now the city committee which has been working on the project has asked the engineering firm it hired to try to trim back the projected price tag.
