Ridgewood Cemetery– a flowering peony showcase and more

NORTH LIBERTY– Johnson County provides one of those lesser-known but most wonderful places to visit– the North Liberty Ridgewood Cemetery. While many go there often to set on the old hillside benches and remember family and friends, many go there to experience one of the most extensive plantings of peonies you will ever see. It’s especially meaningful in May when that peony display is at its finest. They are absolutely beautiful with their many varieties of old pioneer multi-colored flowers– and oh my, that distinct and wonderful smell.

Women of Troy have change-up at the top for 2013

West High women charge into 2013 season with new coach

IOWA CITY — For five years, Jeff Kelley led the West High Women of Troy on the softball diamond. He resigned from that post at the end of April for personal reasons, with a 153-58 overall record and 100-30 in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC). Kelley and company made the team’s first-ever State Tournament appearance last year, finishing fourth in Class 5A.

CCA boys advance to soccer final

3-0 win makes seven straight

TIFFIN– Benson’s Boys are on a hot streak at just the right time. The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys soccer team put away Benton Community 3-0 Wednesday, May 22, at home in a Class 2A Substate Semifinal match on their home turf. The win earned the squad a spot in the substate final on Saturday, May 25, against the Saints of Cedar Rapids Xavier (after the deadline for this issue). The winner heads for the state tournament in Des Moines.
The Clippers’ record improved to 14-4 with the win, Xavier sits at 10-5 after a 4-0 win over the Mount Vernon Mustangs.

CCA falls, then comes back to pound the Sailors

WATERLOO — The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers opened the 2013 varsity baseball season on the road Thursday, May 23 against the Waterloo Columbus Sailors. In the debut of new coach Brent Henry, the Clippers fell 3-2 in the first half of the doubleheader, but rallied back for a 15-7 win in the nightcap.

Trojans trade 10-point games with Davenport West

IOWA CITY– Charlie Stumpff’s West High Trojans opened the 2013 varsity baseball season Monday, May 20, with an 11-1 road win over Benton Community. On Wednesday, May 22, West hosted the Falcons of Davenport West for a varsity double-header on a cool and wet evening.

Benefit to assist Hilmer family May 31

NORTH LIBERTY– The First United Methodist Church and friends of the Todd and Lori Hilmer family will host a cancer benefit on Friday, May 31, from 5:30 until 8 p.m. Tickets for the spaghetti supper are $10 for adults and $5 for children and can be purchased ahead of time at the Methodist Church or at the door. A silent auction will also be held that evening. Dine-in and to-go options are available.

Tiffin city hall location debated after land swap offer

TIFFIN– At the beginning of last week’s meeting, the Tiffin City Council gave tacit approval on a design for a new city hall.
But by the end of the meeting, the building’s location was once again in question, and the heated debate raged on, taking the council’s May 22 meeting to the four-hour mark.

City now seeking sites for garden tour

NORTH LIBERTY– The Centennial Garden Tour Committee welcomes your participation in the 2013 North Liberty Garden Tour, to be held Saturday, July 13, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The event will be held concurrently with the city-wide picnic and family day.

One rockin’ run to benefit resource center

NORTH LIBERTY– More than 200 runners and walkers took to the streets of North Liberty on Saturday, May 18, to raise money for local families. The GPV PTO Rockin’ 5K Run/Walk and Little Rockin’ 1Mile Run was co-coordinated between Garner, Penn and Van Allen elementary schools in North Liberty.
The participants’ entry fees were donated to the North Liberty Family Resource Center, which has a location at each of the three schools.

Pioneer cuisine and craft taught during SMS Pioneer Days

Lily Feaker wore her best bonnet especially for Solon Middle School’s Pioneer Day on May 2. She was hard at work at the quilting table with Michelle Steggall. Students also learned about woodcarving, ice cream making, and hunting with bows and arrows and other old-fashioned fun and games.
