Summer Reading Program

Every Tuesday during Summer Reading Program there is a Free Family Night event. On Tuesday, June 25, at 6:30 p.m., they will have musician Dino O’Dell.
Storytime
Storytime is held every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. for children ages two through five. It is a program of stories, songs, and rhymes followed by a craft. Younger siblings are also welcome to attend. Themes for the month are related to the Summer Reading Program theme, and June 25 will be “Animals That Burrow.”

A tale of two teachers: Hemann, Kopp say goodbye

SOLON– Students who were anxiously getting ready for the final bell to ring have gone home for the summer, and now teachers Tama Hemann and Diane Kopp are clearing out their rooms one last time.
Both retired this year, Kopp having taught for 37 years, and Hemann 41 years– each of them had dream classes this year, and with grandchildren to care for, the timing just felt right.

Eighth graders manning Music on Main

SOLON– Eighth grade students planning to go on the educational trip to Washington D.C. in April 2014, are selling concessions at the weekly Music on Main Street events in Solon. Drinks, popcorn and other summertime treats will be available during each week’s performance. All profits and donations will help to defray the cost of the Washington D.C. trip for students.

Solon girls basketball camp July 15-18

SOLON– There will be a basketball camp this summer for girls going into fourth through eighth grades next year. The camp will be held July 15 through 18 in the Solon High School gymnasium. The seventh and eighth grade camp will be held from 9 until 11 a.m., and the fourth, fifth and sixth grade camp will be held from 1:30 until 3 p.m.
The camp cost is $50 which includes a T-shirt. Current Lady Spartan coaches and players will be instructing the girls in basketball fundamentals.

Fourth of July fireworks over Lake Macbride

SOLON– Celebrate Fourth of July fireworks over Lake Macbride at dark.
The Fourth of July boat parade will start at the Lake Macbride causeway at 4 p.m. Please come and decorate your boat. Rain date is Saturday, July 6.
Donations toward the fireworks are welcome and can be sent to: Mark Ramsey, 1598 Spartan Cir. NE, Solon, IA 52333.

After hours of discussion and deliberation by school board, Kim Blankenheim retains her job

SOLON– Dozens of parents and students paced through Solon High School’s darkened cafeteria, eyes peeled through the library windows to watch a dear friend fight for her job. They anxiously waited for the closed session to open, and the theatrics to cease. Most everyone that night was there for one reason, Kim Blankenheim.

Turkey Vulture festival June 22

CORALVILLE– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Iowa City Bird Club will hold the Third Annual Turkey Vulture festival on Saturday, June 22, from 8 a.m. until noon at the East Overlook Picnic Area, East end of the dam at Coralville Lake.
Exhibitors will include Iowa City Bird Club, Iowa Ornithologist’s Union, Iowa Young Birders, Iowa Audubon, Johnson County Conservation, Macbride Raptor Project, Songbird Project, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Laura Henderson

Laura Ruth Henderson, 52, of Ely, passed away Monday, June 10, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, from a sudden illness. Celebration of Life was June 13 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Inurnment was in Rogers Grove Cemetery.
Laura was born July 9, 1960, in Flint, Mich., the daughter of Donald and Charlotte (Glasco) Hayes. She graduated from the Lincoln Learning Center. She worked at Rockwell, Intermec Corporation and Webb Color Printers for many years.
