City of Solon to mark Main Street project with free ice cream

SOLON– To dedicate the completion of its Main Street improvement project, the City of Solon will be handing out free ice cream before the Wednesday, July 31, Music on Main Solon Idol performance.

SOLON– The Solon Retirement Village (SRV), home to a full continuum of care for seniors in Solon, plans to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year with a free community carnival on Saturday, July 27.

Solon Food Pantry needs donations of cash, food

SOLON– The Solon Community Food Pantry needs your help. The shelves are becoming bare over the summer.

Solon youth football camp Aug. 5 through 8

SOLON– The 2013 Spartan Youth Football Camp for students entering second through eighth grade will be held Aug. 5 through 8 at Spartan Stadium.
Second through fifth graders will attend from 9 until 10:30 a.m., and sixth through eighth graders will attend from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. The fee is $50, with checks payable to Solon Football.
This camp will allow each camper to learn and apply the various skills and techniques applicable to football.

Council approves city hall construction bid

Council sets to find enough money for metal roof

SOLON– The design is set for the new Solon City Hall.
Now the city just needs to find a way to pay for it.
At a July 2 meeting, the Solon City Council approved a bid from Garling Construction of Belle Plaine and Cedar Rapids for the building of the new city offices.
At last week’s July 17 session, the council members started gathering fund balances together to deal with about $120,000 in cost overruns for the fiscal year that ended June 30.
And to find about $17,000 for a metal roof.

Spartan trapshooting team aiming to win

SOLON– From Friday, May 31, through Sunday, June 2, members of the Solon Spartan trapshooting team were in Cedar Falls participating in annual state level competitions.

Lone senior Theairra Taylor prepares to lead

Theairra Taylor started all 34 games last season for the Hawkeye basketball team as a junior.
She also played in all 31 games in her sophomore season.
Not bad for a player who had missed 53 games in her first two years because of knee surgeries.
The Hawkeyes started strong, knocking off four top-20 teams last season early in the year. They lost five straight Big Ten games in a row but still finished with 21 wins and hosted the first round of the NCAA tournament.
They beat Miami in the first game, then lost to Notre Dame, who went to the Final Four, in the second game.

Daniel Joseph Schaapveld

Daniel Joseph Schaapveld, 59, of North Liberty, passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at his home in North Liberty after losing his battle with leukemia. Funeral services for Dan were Sunday, July, 21, 2013, at Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree with Pastor Alicia Williams officiating. Burial was in Letts Cemetery.

Robert Ohrt

Robert “Butch” James Ohrt, 68, of Tipton, died Thursday, June 11, 2013. Funeral services were held July 16, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Tipton where the Rev. Phil Leipold officiated. Burial was at Tipton Masonic Cemetery.
A general memorial fund has been established in memory of Robert.

W. Lois Meyer

W. Lois Meyer, 85, beloved wife and mother and longtime Iowa City resident, left this life as gracefully as she lived her life on Saturday, July 13, 2013.
Funeral services were held July 17 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, with burial following at St. Joseph Cemetery.
