Babygarten starts new session Friday, Sept. 6

Babygarten will be starting up again on Friday, Sept. 6, and meet for six weeks through Friday, Oct. 11. The program will be from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. on Fridays and is designed for children ages newborn through 24 months and their caregivers. Each week there will be rhymes, songs, and time for free play. Registration is required, and is limited to 15. Call the library to register soon.

SOLON– Students interested in playing seventh and eighth grade football will have equipment handouts on the following dates and times:
Eighth grade, Thursday, Aug. 15, starting at 4 p.m. in the athletic hallway at the middle school.
Seventh grade, Monday, Aug. 19, starting at 4 p.m. in the athletic hallway at the middle school.

First day of school

The first full day of school for first through fourth grades is Tuesday, Aug. 20. The first day of school for Kindergarten students is Wednesday, Aug. 21. Kindergarten students will come for an individual assessment on Tuesday, Aug. 21. Kindergarten families should schedule an appointment for the assessment for their child. The first day of school for preschool is Thursday, Aug. 22. Individual home visits will take place with Preschool families Aug. 19 through 21.

Second annual Eastern Iowa Orchid Show and Sale Oct. 19 and 20

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Eastern Iowa Orchid Society will hold an orchid show and sale at the Noelridge Park Greenhouse, 4900 Council St. NE, Cedar Rapids on Oct. 19 and 20. The show is free and open to the public Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sunday from 10a.m. until 4 p.m.

IOWA CITY– A free talk on the basics of safe canning, freezing and dehydrating of fruits, herbs and vegetables will be offered Friday, Aug. 16, from 12:10-12:55 p.m. “Extending Your Garden Harvest: Food Preservation 101” will be held in rooms 203B-C of the Johnson County Health and Human Services (HHS) Building, located at 855 S. Dubuque St. in Iowa City.

Hawk Talk

It’s time to break down the Hawkeye football team.
This week I’ll talk about the offense, including the line, tight ends, wide receivers and fullbacks.
The more I look at the offensive line, the more I like it.
First of all, you have seven players that started at least one game last year.
There is no better experience than starting a game. It’s different than going in for a few plays because when you start, you get all the reps with the first team during the week.
Also Eric Simmons (6-2, 295) and Ryan Ward (6-5, 290) red shirted so they will add depth.


Deborah Steva

Deborah Jean Steva, 66, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a four-year battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Aug. 10 at the United Church of Monticello, with interment at Monona Cemetery, Monona. The Rev. Edwin Moreano officiated at the services.

Sandy Powell

Sandy Powell, 73, of rural North Liberty died at her home Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013.
Memorial services will be held Aug. 14 at the First United Methodist Church in North Liberty. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in her memory to the First United Methodist Church of North Liberty.


Russell Patterson

Russell W. Patterson, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, after a short illness at Silver Pines Assisted Living Center, Cedar Rapids. Services were held Aug. 8 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Pastor David Dyrland. Burial was at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military rites.
