Hawkeye men and women have 20 wins

The Hawkeye men needed to win their last two home games and maybe two games in the Big Ten Tournament to have a shot at the NCAA tournament.
The got one in a good win over Illinois, 63-55, last week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
It was another one of those grind-it-out games, but Devyn Marble and Iowa’s bench were too tough for the Fighting Illini.
Devyn was 10-10 from the free throw line, scoring 21 points with six rebounds and four assists.
Devyn has really stepped up his game since Mike Gesell went down with a foot injury, and has carried the team to a 2-1 record without Mike.


Larry Hayes

Larry Warren Hayes, 67, of Keokuk, formerly of Ely, died Sunday, March 3, 2013. Private family services will be held at a later date. Burial was at Croton Cemetery in Croton.
Survivors include his son, Marcus Hayes; his mother, Betty McPherson-Hayes; Stephen Hayes and Todd Hayes; sisters, Susan Hayes and Beverly Hayes; daughter-in-law, Jenny Hayes; and grandsons, Cian and Lochlann Hayes.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Shelly Hayes; his father, James Leroy Hayes Sr.; and stepfather, Cecil Hayes.


Bernard Milder

Bernard J. “Red” Milder, 90, of Iowa City, died at his home on Tuesday, March 5, 2013.
Mass of Christian Burial was March 8 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. The Very Reverend Rudolph Juarez officiated. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Iowa City Hospice, American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.


Delores Randall

Delores Ann Randall, 77, of Solon, died Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Solon Nursing Care Center surrounded by her family.
Mass of Christian Burial was held March 8 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon. Reverend James Vrba officiated. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery in Solon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice. Delores was born Dec. 2, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Emil and Lottie (Shulista) Pospisil.
Growing up in Cedar Rapids, she graduated from McKinley High School. She married Robert D. Randall Sr. on April 25, 1953, in Solon.

Toilet tribulations

During a recent stay at a motel I saw something odd: in the bathroom there were two toilet paper rolls offered, one over the other.
This brought to mind one of the age-old conundrums that has pestered human minds since the first rolls were mass produced in the 14th century: should toilet paper be hung so it reels off the top or bottom?

I got a chuckle out of seeing that bumper sticker ahead of me while I waited at the stoplight. It got me thinking about all the crusades to save various species of wildlife I’ve seen over the years. When I was fresh out of college, there weren’t so many crusades, not nearly the number of animals designated as endangered as there are now, bumper stickers and posters for the various causes were uncommon. By the mid-’50s, I was becoming aware of causes other than soil conservation and the wisdom of having your dog or cat neutered.

Ellis honored for 20 years as “The Voice of the Spartans”

SOLON– Don Ellis loves sports. He loves Solon. He especially loves Solon Spartans sports. For 20 years, he’s been the guy sitting next to the official scorekeeper and the scoreboard operator with a microphone in his hand doing the announcing at Solon High School sporting events.

Hawk men split

The Hawkeye men took on both Indiana teams last week, hosting Purdue last Wednesday and traveling to Indiana on Saturday.
The Boilermaker game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, which Iowa won 58-48, was one of those grind-it-out games that wasn’t a lot of fun to watch… unless you were an Iowa fan.
It didn’t help that Mike Gesell was out with a stress fracture. He has averaged the most minutes since the Big Ten season started and might be back for the Big Ten Tournament.
Devyn Marble looked good taking over the point. He had 18 points, four assists and only three turnovers in 29 minutes.
