Sharp to retire from VA director’s post

Solon’s Barry Sharp pleased with the progress in serving health needs of veterans

By Alex Kline

IOWA CITY– Walking through the Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Iowa City can be intimidating to say the least. Even on Christmas Eve, the hallways of the VA are full of patients and staff bustling in and out of exam rooms. Among the many faces, one is familiar, and he will say “hello” to everyone.
This friendly face is that of Iowa City Veteran Affairs hospital medical director and self-proclaimed “Solon-oid,” Barry Sharp. He will be retiring from the position in January after seven years at the Iowa City campus.

McKenna Cole tracks trees as they filter Solon wastewater

SOLON– You wouldn’t expect most high school seniors to spend much time at Solon’s waste water treatment plant behind Randall Park. But on a blustery Saturday morning, McKenna Cole and her father were ducking around two planter boxes attached to a vat of wastewater, making quick adjustments to her experimental filtration system.

Not meant to be

Iowa lost to the LSU Tigers 21-14 last week in the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day. It just wasn’t meant to be.
First Mike Meyer, the second-best field goal kicker ever at Iowa (Nate Kaeding is number one), missed a 35-yard chip shot in the third quarter with no wind.
Then Kevonte Martin-Manley fumbled a punt, LSU recovered and drove for a score. Kevonte hasn’t done that all year.
Finally John Lowdermilk had a pick-six as he intercepted a pass on his own 28, broke free and crossed the goal line… but he dropped the ball before he scored.

Hawkeyes - Up and down for UI sports

Hawk Talk

By Don Lund
Sports Writer

Last week was the last time, until next October, I get to cover the four sports I’ve been writing about since I came on board in 2001.
On Monday, Dec. 30, the Hawkeye wrestlers won their 23rd Midlands Championship, crowned three champions and scored a tournament record 187.5 points.
How about redshirt freshman Thomas Gilman (125) beating defending Midlands champ Jarrod Garnet 6-1 to win his first title?
Tuesday, Dec. 31, saw the Hawkeye men’s basketball team, despite missing 17 free throws, take down Nebraska, 67-57, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Marion Werning

Marion R. Werning, 69, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha following an extended illness. Funeral Services were held Jan. 3 at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, with the Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating. Interment was at St. John Cemetery near Newhall. Memorials may be directed to the church.

Neil Stratton

Neil “Nico” Christopher Stratton, 51, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at home following a sudden illness.
He was born on Dec. 23, 1961. Although he called Iowa home his entire life, Neil loved traveling all across the Midwest exploring its rich history.
Neil was an adventurer. Storm chasing and prospecting for gold out West were among his exciting pursuits. He was an avid outdoorsman, passionate about snowmobiling and riding his ATV.
A nature and animal lover, he was ardently devoted to the pets he had throughout his life.

LaVern Stephenson

LaVern Norma Erickson Stephenson passed away on Dec. 29, 2013, at Windmill Manor in Coralville. Funeral Service was held Jan. 2 at the Presbyterian Church in Springville by the Rev. Dr. Karen Downey Beals. Burial was at Springville Cemetery.
