Clipper boys take third, girls fourth in home XC meet

IOWA CITY– The University of Iowa’s Ashton Cross Country Course was the site for the 2014 Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Invitational meet Monday, Sept. 29.
Vinton-Shellsburg won the girls varsity race with 15 team points while the Clippers were fourth with 70. In varsity boys action, it was also Vinton-Shellsburg taking the team title, with 24 points. The Clipper crew was third with 48.
Chloe Keith set the pace for the Clipper girls with an 11th-place finish in 17:34.84 while Eric Douglass was the leader for the boys, finishing third in 17:05.81.

Borde second, Skopec third in West XC meet

IOWA CITY– West High held its Cross Country Invitational Tuesday, Sept. 30, at the University of Iowa’s Ashton Cross Country Course. Both the varsity boys and girls were second in team points with Johnston taking the girls’ race with 44 team points and a total time of 1:12:37.30. Cedar Rapids Prairie took the boys team title with 57 points and a total time of 1:22:02.74. The Trojans had 75 points and a total time of 1:22:43.24 while the Women of Troy had 87 points and a time of 1:14:08.58.

Clippers roll over Mt. Pleasant 44-6

MOUNT PLEASANT– A great season got even better Friday, Oct. 3, as the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers sailed into Mount Pleasant and shelled the Panthers 44-6 in Class 3A District No. 5 varsity action.
The Clippers put up 468 yards of offense to 210 for Mount Pleasant. Tanner Bandy was in full attack mode for CCA with 240 yards and four touchdowns, three rushing and one from returning an interception 60 yards in the fourth quarter.

Women of Troy fall prey to the Lions

Linn-Mar 3, IC West 2

MARION– The West High Women of Troy traveled to Linn-Mar Tuesday, Sept. 30, for an Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) match-up, and stumbled in the Lions’ den for a 3-2 loss.
West took the first set 25-17, but was dominated in the second for a 25-5 loss. Despite rallying back in the third set the Women of Troy came up on the wrong end of the 27-25 match score. Down two games to one, West High surged to a 25-20 victory to tie the match. The fifth and final set went to the Lions, 15-9.

Raiders scuttle Clippers’ senior night

TIFFIN– Seven seniors were recognized for their contributions to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) volleyball program on Senior Night, Tuesday, Sept. 30. Lauren Stopko, McKenzie Fuller, Bailey Butler, Dacia Lipkea, Hanna Stokes, Natalie Brimeyer and Jana Sefzik were honored just before the varsity march with the Williamsburg Raiders.
Unfortunately for the seventh-ranked (in Class 4A) Clippers, the un-ranked Raiders spoiled the special night by winning three games to two in an upset.

West tripped up in overtime

West falls to Bettendorf, 28-27

IOWA CITY– “Gut-wrenching.”
That’s how West High football coach Garrett Hartwig described his squad’s 28-27 loss in overtime to Bettendorf Friday, Oct. 3, at home.
“I got more respect for the 53 men in that room (gesturing toward the locker room) right now than anybody else,” Hartwig said. “At this point in the season, it’s about executing. Bettendorf executed, credit goes to them they’re a great program.” Hartwig said his Trojans were getting better, but “we’re not where we need to be yet.”

ICCSD board backs physical plant director after contractor damage at City High

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) on Tuesday, Sept. 23, discussed damage caused by D.A. Bunch Company of Cedar Rapids while executing a contract to paint the cupola of City High School.
Director Patti Fields pulled the accounts payable item from the consent agenda.
Fields noted D.A. Bunch Company of Cedar Rapids had been paid $23,885 for a contract to paint the City High School cupola. While doing the work, Bunch damaged the sidewalk and turf at the high school, something Fields had noticed during a recent visit.

Hwy. 965 phase 1 to re-open

NORTH LIBERTY– Weather depending, the first stage of Highway 965 construction is expected to reopen by Monday, Oct. 13. Work will then begin on a 600-foot section of the highway north of the current work zone through the railroad crossing near the Dubuque Street intersection.
This work is expected to last into November. No construction or detours are expected for the winter months.

Cedar Rapids Horsemen’s Club to celebrate 70 years Oct. 12

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Cedar Rapids Horsemen’s Club invite the public to join them for a 70 years of memories Sunday Night Supper (Frank Zaspal, chef) on Oct. 12, at 6 p.m. at their club on, 11818 Club Road. There will be a Social Hour at 5 p.m., with a short program following supper.

Tiffin: Park Ridge PAD under reconsideration

TIFFIN– Unsure of how to answer a number of requests from a developer, the Tiffin City Council held a special work session to discuss them.
Kevin Hochstedler presented the Park Ridge Planned Area Development (PAD) to the council Sept. 10 for a two-phase, eight-home subdivision on 31 acres off Park Road in Tiffin. Its location on the eastern edge of Tiffin’s current municipal boundaries puts it inside city limits, but about half a mile from the city’s current public utility lines.
