Jail: finally light at the end of a long, dark tunnel

County commits to securing bids for repair

IOWA CITY– Johnson County Supervisor Rod Sullivan wants people to fully understand the situation with the county jail, and its estimated $1 million repair and renovation project.
“We’re not just fixing it up,” he said. “Our hand has been forced.”
Sullivan and his fellow supervisors unanimously approved the plans, specifications, and bid requests for badly-needed work at the facility, which was built in the 1980s. The resolution passed during the formal meeting Thursday, Oct. 2.

North Liberty mayoral race turns slightly cloudy

Campaigns tinged with doubts on ethics

NORTH LIBERTY– The spotlight always glares on candidates and their campaign ethics when it comes to high-profile political races.
Similarly, some citizens are calling for light to be shed on both sides of the race for North Liberty’s mayoral seat.
On Tuesday, Nov. 4, voters will choose between incumbent Gerry Kuhl and newcomer candidate Amy Nielsen to complete the unexpired term of the late Mayor Tom Salm, who passed away in May.

Board approves design work for troublesome trail

CCA school board approves contract, hears project updates

OXFORD– It’s been a long, twisting path, but the end may finally be just ahead.
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school board approved a $52,000 contract with Shive-Hattery for the design of a sidewalk-trail along the north side of the district’s property in Tiffin. The move came during the board’s regular monthly meeting Wednesday, Oct. 15, in Oxford.
The vote puts the project, mandated by the city of Tiffin’s code of ordinances and a recurring source of friction between the two entities, one step closer to fruition.

No trip to state for cross country teams

By Joe Wilkinson
Special to the Economist
SOLON– Going in to their state qualifying meets, Solon’s cross country teams knew they were up against several ranked schools as they tried to grab one of three team slots or a top-10 individual finish in the Class 3A state meet lineup this weekend.
Unfortunately, the rankings held true.
Both the boys’ and girls’ teams finished sixth in the Oct. 23 qualifier.

Solon falls to West Delaware in WaMaC championship

Lady Spartans defeat Tipton in the first round of playoffs; Northeast Goose Lake comes to town Thursday night

SOLON– For the last three years, Solon has been West Delaware’s Achilles’ heel.
Now it’s their chance to return the favor.
The No. 2 team in Class 4A defeated the No. 2 team in Class 3A in the WaMaC tournament championship Oct. 21 in Mount Vernon.
West Delaware defeated Solon 2-0, with the second set going all the way to 31-29.
The Lady Spartans won the conference tournament the three previous years, each time defeating the Hawks, although West Delaware prevented Solon from claiming the regular season title the last two seasons.

Solon finishes regular season with 28-12 win; Davenport Assumption next as playoffs begin

SOLON– The Solon Spartans didn’t rack up the points this week, but the one-two punch of Brandon Kramer and Brandan Childs (with a dash of Connor Ham) rolled up nearly 400 yards of offense in a 28-12 win over Dubuque Wahlert Friday in Solon.
The Solon football team moved to 8-1, but will turn around quickly as the Class 3A playoffs were scheduled to begin Wednesday, Oct. 29, with the Spartans hosting Davenport Assumption (5-4). Assumption comes into the game having lost two of its last three games, including a 45-27 loss at Washington Friday.

Flood repair, rock work on Lake Macbride

JOHNSON COUNTY– Repair work, getting underway over the next few days, will re-armor the Lake Macbride shoreline and jetties damaged in 2013 flooding.
Eight inches of April rain last year sent the lake’s water level climbing by four feet. Heavy rock, set in place to stabilize the shoreline and reduce soil runoff, was lost. Chris Jones Trucking of West Branch will move in a barge this week and begin work early next week. The barge will float large rock toward shoreline areas and islands that cannot be reached from shore.

Spartan Wrestling Club starts with “Meet the Coaches Night” Nov. 10

SOLON– As the temperature outside begins to drop, the action in the Solon wrestling room starts to heat up and this year is no exception as the Spartan Wrestling Club is preparing to begin another season. While the emphasis will continue to be on learning the fundamentals of wrestling and having fun, the Spartan Wrestling Club is making several changes this year in an effort to become a more competitive wrestling club. The first significant change is the addition of club head coach Dale Handley.
