NL to conduct special census

Stand up, be counted

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty will move forward with a special population census, even though it will pay twice what was expected.
“The cost came in a little higher than we initially thought,” said City Administrator Ryan Heiar to the city council last Tuesday. “But the return on investment is still very favorable to us.”

Haunted Happenings

The annual Haunted Happenings, hosted by the Recreation Department and the North Liberty Optimists Club, will be at the Community Center, 520 W Cherry St., on Thursday, Oct. 23 and Friday, Oct. 24, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The event costs $5 per participant at the door, and offers a tunnel, mazes, carnival games and fun. Everyone is invited to come in costume. No pre-registration required.

Jazzy jack-o-lanterns

NORTH LIBERTY- Smiling Jack ‘o’ Lanterns, ghosts, and even a minion from “Despicable Me” all made an unexpected appearance at the North Liberty Recreation Center last weekend.
With the help of some paint and glitter, kids were able to decorate their very own pumpkins the morning of Saturday, Oct. 18.

Lady Spartans roll over Anamosa

VINTON– The postseason has arrived for the Solon volleyball team.
The Lady Spartans swept Anamosa to end the regular season Oct. 14, and then rebounded from an opening loss to Maquoketa in WaMaC pool play Oct. 16 to defeat Benton Community and Clear Creek Amana (CCA).
Solon was scheduled to face Center Point-Urbana in WaMaC bracket play Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Mount Vernon.

Boys ninth at conference, district next

IOWA CITY– It was Mount Vernon’s race to win or lose, and the Mustangs responded with four top-10 runners at the WaMaC cross country meet Oct. 16 to stride away with the title. Mount Vernon’s 40 points– the totaled places of its top five runners– provided a comfortable margin at the University of Iowa Ashton Cross Country Course in Iowa City.

Solon to host state qualifier Oct. 23

XC girls finish fifth at WaMaC meet

IOWA CITY– A tough field faces Solon’s girls, as state qualifying cross country meets are held around the state this week. Only the top three teams– and top 10 individual runners– from each class move on to the Nov. 1 state meet in Fort Dodge.
The Lady Spartans face four ranked schools in 3A, but teams they have run against this season. Solon– ranked in the top-15 for several weeks earlier this season– would have to knock off at least two... and hold off any late season surprise team... to return to state.

Spartans run over Western Dubuque’s unbeaten district record

Hopes for district title still alive

EPWORTH– Once again, offense, defense and special teams helped the Solon football team to a big win.
The Spartans traveled to Epworth Friday for a showdown with Western Dubuque and came away with a 55-26 win, setting up a three-way tie atop the Class 3A District 4 standings going into the final week of the regular season.
Western Dubuque entered the game unbeaten in the district, having upset Cedar Rapids Xavier 7-6 in week six. Solon’s lone loss of the season came at Xavier in week three, a 28-0 shut out.
Since then, the Spartans have outscored their opponents, 221-64.

Council mulls ‘Freedom Rock,’ reviews 2014 budget

SOLON– Freedom rocks!
And the city may be getting a “Freedom Rock®” as part of a statewide effort to honor veterans, promote Iowa tourism, and support the family of Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II.
Denny Gruber, of the Solon Area Community Foundation, explained the potential project at the Wednesday, Oct. 15, city council meeting.
“This project won’t cost you a thing,” said Gruber to get council’s attention.

Solon Library Board of Trustees vacancy for rural resident

SOLON– The City of Solon is now accepting applications for membership on the Library Board of Trustees for a Johnson County Rural Representative. The Library Board of Trustees meets on the fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. Applicants must reside within rural Johnson County. If you are interested in becoming a member of the board, submit an application to the city office at 101 N. Iowa St., Solon. The application can be found on the city’s website at www.solon-iowa.com.

DeWayne Klouda write-in campaign for Big Grove Township Trustee

SOLON– DeWayne Klouda is running a write-in campaign for Big Grove Township Trustee in the Nov. 4 election. He currently serves as a trustee and was appointed this year upon the retirement of Elmer Vanorny. He has prior service as Township Clerk, beginning in 1998. He is familiar with the roles and responsibilities of the township, which include managing the township budget and the Tri-Township Fire Department, operating Oakdale Cemetery, custodian of the pioneer cemetery at Fackler’s Grove, and resolving lot line disputes.
