West High girls sweep Muskies, Polk

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy made it two thirds of the way to the state tournament with wins over Muscatine and Southeast Polk in Class 5A regional quarterfinal and semifinal action.
The tournament trail started at home Monday, Oct. 27, as the 3-23 Muscatine Muskies visited for a regional quarterfinal match. West had little trouble pulling off a 3-0 sweep and earning the trip to Southeast Polk for the semifinal match.

Clippers advance to regional final on 3-0 win

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers volleyball team advanced to a Class 4A regional final match-up with Cedar Rapids Xavier after defeating the Fort Madison Bloodhounds 3-0 in a regional semifinal at home Thursday, Oct. 30.
The Clippers won 25-11, 25-16 and 25-20.

CCA’s historic season ends in first round

TIFFIN– An historic season for Clear Creek Amana (CCA) football came to a gut-grinding and heart-breaking end Wednesday, Oct. 29, on the home turf as the Cardinals of Newton held on for a 23-21 win in a Class 3A first round playoff game.
“It was a hard-fought game, there’s no doubt about it,” coach Matt Hughes said. “We started slow, that proved to be the thing that killed us.”
The Clippers found themselves in a 14-point hole in the first quarter as Newton scored on a 4-yard rushing play with 7:05 left in the period and followed that with a 50-yard touchdown reception.

Trojans survive Lin-Mar Lions with upset win

MARION– They never say die.
The Iowa City West High Trojans were down 31-34 with just over two minutes left in the game Monday, Nov. 3, as they faced the Linn-Mar Lions in the second round of Class 4A playoffs. A drive of over 90 yards ensued and ended with Yeshuwa Hicks making an 8-yard run for a touchdown with 25 seconds left in the game. After Connor Gordon’s extra point kick, the Trojans had a 38-34 lead and the win.

Tease your hair: CCA Retro Prom fundraiser to be held Nov. 15

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Retro Prom “Return to Paradise” will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the CCA Middle School. Admission is $25/couple or $15 for individuals. Come dressed in your finest ‘80s attire and compete to win Best Dressed Couple. All proceeds benefit the Clear Creek Amana Post Prom Party.

NL Legion Auxiliary to host free Vets Day dinner Nov. 11

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty American Legion Auxiliary will host a Veterans Day dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 6 p.m. at South Slope’s community room, 980 N. Front St., North Liberty.
The evening will include a home-cooked meal, videos, music by Heritage Christian School, and guest speaker, Roy Romans from the Iowa City Veterans Administration Medical Facility. Colors will be advanced by the Solon American Legion Color Guard, and a bugler from Boy Scout Troop 216 will accompany the ceremony.
Door prizes will be presented throughout the evening.

Seniors invited to CCA dinner Nov. 8

TIFFIN– On Saturday, Nov. 8, beginning at 6 p.m., the Clear Creek Amana Student Assistance Team will hold its annual Senior Supper. Anyone over the age of 55 is invited to attend, and spend a few hours with 20 or 30 of the best kids you will ever meet.
The meal includes ham, turkey and covered dishes. Bring your appetite and share your experiences with our students. The students have been know to play some euchre and hearts as well. Please call 319-545-5623 and leave a message indicating how many will attend.

NL Pantry seeks pastries, crafts for Nov. 23 garden fundraiser

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry is planning a bake sale, craft sale, and other activities during a fall-themed fundraiser for its community teaching garden from 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at First United Methodist Church, 89 N. Jones Blvd.

Zombie apocalypse no match for ZASC team

NORTH LIBERTY– Are you ready for the attack of the killer zombies?
Even if you don’t believe in that possibility, there are other potential disasters– catastrophic floods, dangerous storms, or a power grid failure, for example– that could devastate neighborhoods, communities or entire regions in a matter of hours.
Whatever the cause, Guy Cain, John Watson and their team of survival specialists want you to be prepared for any eventuality. The two conducted a day-long survival skills workshop at the North Liberty Recreation Center on Saturday, Oct. 25, to an audience of about 20.

New police officer to cover NL school beat

NLPD will gain personnel through $125K COPS grant

NORTH LIBERTY– Like the community it serves, the North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) is growing again.
The force, currently with 17 full-time officers, was recently awarded a federal, three-year Community Oriented Police Support (COPS) COPS Hiring Program (CHP) grant in the amount of $125,000 to hire an additional officer.
