Old Gold Diner pulls out all the stops for Valentine’s Day luncheon

Be Mine

SOLON– Old Gold Diner Site Manager Duane McAtee modestly called it a pretty good turnout.
The fellowship hall of the Solon United Methodist Church was dressed up for a fine dining experience as the Old Gold Diner served up a sit-down dinner for Valentine’s Day Friday, Feb. 14.
Red tablecloths, red and white roses on every table, a Valentine’s Day bunting across the front of the hall, live music and a meal of prime rib, roasted asparagus and cheesecake awaited a capacity crowd.

DNR addresses Macbride forest management plan

By Paul Deaton
Solon Economist

SOLON– When Anthony Sells built the first sawmill with an upright saw in Big Grove Township in 1839, there were a lot of nearby trees. Things changed as the land was cleared for development, to the extent that when the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently marked a number of mature trees in the state park, people noticed and wondered what was going on.

Hawkeye wrestlers place second

Hawk Talk

University of Iowa senior Tony Ramos won the 133-pound Big Ten title during championship round action of the conference tournament Sunday at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. The Hawkeyes finished second in the team standings with 135 points, trailing only Penn State’s 140.5 points.
Nine Iowa wrestlers finished in the top five of their respective brackets, the most of any school. All nine place winners earned an automatic berth to the 2014 NCAA Championships.

Hawkeye men end regular basketball season

Iowa finished the regular season with a road trip to Michigan State and a home game against Illinois.
What a sad way to end a once-promising season.
Can you believe Iowa was sitting at 8-4, ranked 10th in the nation and some were predicting a possible Final Four?
Then the roof fell in.
The Hawkeyes’ 86-76 loss to the Spartans last Thursday was really frustrating.
Michigan State hosted Illinois on Saturday, March 1, and lost 53-46.
The Spartans scored 50 points against Iowa... IN THE SECOND HALF!
State shot 39 percent from the floor and 33 percent from 3-point range against Illinois.

Hawkeye women get 2nd in big 10

The Iowa women traveled to Indianapolis last week and made it to the finals of the Big Ten Tournament before losing to Nebraska, 72-65.
They knocked off Illinois, Purdue and Ohio State along the way.
The game against Illinois last Thursday was the third time Iowa played the Fighting Illini this season.
They won for the third time, 81-62, but not without some challenges.
Samantha Logic picked up two quick fouls, sat out for a while, came back in, got her third foul and Illinois took a one-point lead, 27-26, with 4:22 left in the first half.
