IOWA CITY– The 17th annual Citizens’ Police Academy concluded last Monday, April 7, with a graduation ceremony for nearly 30 Johnson County residents who wanted an up-close and personal look inside the world of law enforcement.

Clear Creek Amana school board approves 1:1 computer purchase for middle school in 2014-15

OXFORD– Starting this fall, every student in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) middle school will have their own Chromebook personal computer to use in class and at home. The district’s school board approved spending $157,739.50 to purchase 500 devices at its regular meeting Wednesday, April 16, at Clear Creek Elementary in Oxford.

Solon basketball camps offered in June and July

SOLON– Camp Director and head boys basketball coach Jason S. Pershing will be offering three different camp opportunities for the Solon community as well as surrounding communities. The basketball camps will foster a fundamental approach, with a lot of skill development. Each camp will have a guest camp instructor that has competed athletically at the collegiate level as well as professional level. Each camp will be capped at 42 participants, to ensure maximum interaction, individualized attention and instruction.

Bevans hired as Solon’s head wrestling coach

SOLON– The Solon Community School District is pleased to announce the hiring of T.J. Bevans as head wrestling coach (pending school board approval).
Bevans served as the assistant varsity wrestling coach at Solon for the last seven seasons, including one season as interim co-head coach in the 2008-2009 season.

Spartans take title at CCA relays: Ferguson sets shot put record

VINTON– The Solon boys track team ran twice this past week, looking to prepare for the WaMaC conference meet to be held this Thursday at Benton Community High School in Van Horne.
The team ran to a second-place finish Monday as they competed on a cold and rainy evening in Vinton.

Boys fall to No.2 Regina but tame Mustangs-blank Maquoketa, 4-0

SOLON– What better way to rebound from a weekend loss to No. 2 Iowa City Regina than with a win?
Solon’s varsity soccer team moved to 8-6 on the season with a breezy 4-0 victory over Maquoketa Monday, May 6.
The Spartans fell to second-ranked 1A Regina Saturday morning, 3-0, but it was the first loss for the boys since a defeat at the hands of No. 1-ranked Dyersville Beckman. Solon has won five of its last six, including a 1-0 win over Mount Vernon at Spartan Stadium Friday.

Girls track team looks ahead to conference and regional meets

TIFFIN– In a week which saw one rainout, one meet title, and one meet decided after publication deadline, Solon’s girls head into the home stretch of the 2014 track season with combinations in mind.
Which individual entries should rack up points at conference, regional and… hopefully… state? Or should they team up for stronger relay performances? The track and field chess match is in play, with Solon going to the WaMaC meet Thursday in Vinton and the regional meet next week at Marion.

Lady Spartans fall to No. 1 Assumption, beat Mustangs

MOUNT VERNON– Friday’s 5-2 win against the Mount Vernon Mustangs boosted Solon’s Lady Spartans to a 6-1 varsity soccer record.
Once again the girls proved that hard work and great coaching are the key to a winning season. Seniors Anna Seydel and Brianna Pike and freshman Josie Durr scored a goal each with junior Emma Moss bringing home two goals.
Seydel and Durr each had an assist, as did Jade Flansburg, while Ali Herdliska had two.
