Beef Days Committee awards $30,000 in donations

SOLON– Solon Beef Days Committee is proud to announce recipients of this year’s Beef Days donations, which are requested up through February and earmarked each year in April to be given back to the community and surrounding area. The following organizations and activities were chosen on the merit of their projects as this year’s recipients.

Auditorium plans shaping up for September vote

Board continues tweaking

SOLON– In two weeks, everyone should have a much clearer picture of the direction the school board is going with its plans for a new middle school and auditorium.
At least, that’s what Superintendent Sam Miller thinks.
Updated concept drawings and price estimates were presented to the members of the Solon Community School District’s (SCSD) Board of Education last week as they continued preparing a bond issue for consideration by district voters later this year.

Solon district to host Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast May 23

SOLON– The Solon Community School District will host its 2013-14 Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast Friday, May 23, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Lakeview Elementary Media Center.
If you have volunteered for the school district during the past school year, please feel free to attend as a token of the district’s gratitude.

Friends of St. Bridget’s Memorial Day Mass Monday, May 26

SOLON– The Friends of St. Bridget’s Foundation announces that a Memorial Day Mass for Veterans and deceased loved ones will be offered at St. Bridget’s Cemetery on Monday May 26, at 9 a.m. The church and cemetery are located at 2136 St Bridget’s Road NE, Solon (take Highway 1 to Morse Road.) All are welcome. Please bring your lawn chairs. In case of rain, Mass will be held in the church.

51st Solon volunteer firefighters breakfast Sunday, May 25

SOLON– The Solon Fire Department will host its 51st Annual Solon Firefighter’s Breakfast from 6:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, at the Solon Fire Station, 131 N. Iowa St.
The breakfast is all-you-can-eat and the menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, fried eggs, patty sausage, sliced ham, milk and coffee. Cost is free for preschool children, $4 for children 12 and younger and $6 for adults. For more information, call 319-624-2386.

Mehaffey Bridge work underway

JOHNSON COUNTY– Mehaffey Bridge Road is getting a facelift, and road officials want the public to be prepared.
North Liberty and Johnson County staff members and project engineers hosted an open house at South Slope in North Liberty on Tuesday, May 13, to answer questions about the upcoming roadwork.

Last week, I talked to first-year assistant coach Lacey Goldwire about the regular season for the Iowa Hawkeye women’s basketball team.
This week, we’ll look at the Big Ten Tournament, the NCAA Tournament, returning players and new recruits.
The Hawks finished 27-9, 11-5 in the Big Ten, which tied Purdue for fourth place.

Lavera Nielsen

LaVera “Vera” Wilhelmina Nielsen, 86, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Celebration of Life services were held May 12 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with burial following in Lisbon Cemetery.
Vera was born Oct. 29, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Bert T. and Wilhelmina “Minnie” Augusta (Lerch) Ward. Vera was united in marriage to Donald Lown in 1945, they were later divorced. She married Jim Paul in 1958 until his death in 1964. Vera was then united in marriage to Jim Nielsen in 1972 until his death in 1986.

Harold Moffit

Harold Elroy Moffit, 78, died Monday, May 12, 2014, at Manor Care in Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of Life Service was held May 16, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Elder Alan Trumpold officiated. Burial was in the Piersol Cemetery, rural North English. A general memorial fund has been established.
