By Chris Umscheid

IOWA CITY– Voters in Johnson County will decide in November whether or not to approve a $30,800,000 bond referendum for a courthouse annex.
The Johnson County Board of Supervisors gave tentative approval for the floor plans of the proposed three-story structure in a meeting Wednesday, May 8, with Neumann Monson Architects and Venture Architects as well as County Attorney Janet Lyness and Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek. The board gave an overview of the facility later that afternoon in a meeting with the Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee.

American Legion Auxiliary’s Poppy Days in Solon May 17 through 26

SOLON– Each year the American Legion Auxiliary distributes poppies to commemorate the sacrifice of our servicemen and women who gave their lives in our country’s wars. The tradition of having the memorial flower honor the war dead began after World War I when returning soldiers brought memories of the battlefield poppies which were immortalized in Canadian John McCrae’s poem “In Flander’s Fields” whose opening lines are familiar to millions around the world:
“In Flander’s Fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses row on row…”

Steve Stange appointed mayor of Solon

Residents have two weeks to call for special election

By Paul Deaton
Solon Economist
SOLON– The city council appointed Steve Stange mayor at a May 7 meeting, and decided to appoint, rather than elect, his replacement on the council.
City voters have until Wednesday, May 21, to file a petition for a special election if they disagree with Stange’s appointment.
Stange had expressed an interest in the position after previous mayor Cami Rasmussen resigned her post to accept an interim position as city administrator.

Very good season

Hawk Talk

When I look back at the Iowa Hawkeye women’s basketball season, it still amazes me that Lisa Bluder’s team won 27 games. That ties for the second most wins in the history of Hawkeye women’s basketball.
They not only won 27 games, they won three in the Big Ten tournament and got beat by Nebraska in the championship game.
Iowa played with only one player (Bethany Doolittle) over 6-1.
The Hawks saw all five starters score in double figures, had three players coming off the bench and some of the best chemistry on and off the court.
