North Liberty honored as a leader in kids’ play

NORTH LIBERTY– KaBoom and the Humana Foundation has named North Liberty, for the third straight year, a Playful City USA community as a leader in playability by making it easy for kids to get balanced and active play.
“We’re a young and active community,” said North Liberty Mayor Tom Salm. “Our parks and recreation staff work tirelessly on our community’s recreation trails, playgrounds, parks and pools so our children and families have access to the means to stay active year round. It’s exciting to see the work recognized nationally.”

Spending plan

Tiffin hires V&K to help create CIP strategy

TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin is paying to learn how to spend its money.
At its May 14 meeting, the Tiffin City Council approved a contract not to exceed $6,250 with engineering firm Veenstra & Kimm (V&K) Inc., to assist in crafting the city’s long-range capital improvements plan, or CIP.
Doug DeBolt and Bob Veenstra presented the proposal, outlining the services V&K provides to cities in comprehensive planning and strategies to pay for capital improvements.
“It’s a pretty methodical process with a heavy emphasis on the financial aspect,” said DeBolt.

NL storm sewer project brings costs overflows

Money in the drain

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s never good when a contractor’s bill is higher than original estimates.
It’s extra bad when the bill more than doubles.
That was the situation facing the North Liberty City Council at its May 27 meeting, when McClure Engineering project manager Kevin Bailey explained a change order to the city’s storm sewer improvements along Highway 965.

NRA names NLPD’s Shine Officer of the Year

Heroism under fire

NORTH LIBERTY– The date was March 10, 2013. North Liberty police officers Christopher Shine and Cody Jacobsen responded with Sergeant Adam Olson to a 9-1-1 call about a domestic fight in the Holiday Mobile Home Court. Upon their arrival, they found a female resident sitting outside the home at 238 Holiday Lodge. She was crying, red-faced and emotionally distressed. Inside the trailer was 28-year old Taleb Salameh.

Solon closes out regular season with loss to Regina

SOLON– The Solon girls hosted their last home soccer game Thursday, May 22, with a 4-1 win against Mid-Prairie.
The Lady Spartans scored three of the four goals in the first half and the fourth just minutes into the second half. Credit for the goals went to seniors Anna Seydel, Alyssa Stotler and Brianna Pike and sophomore Jade Flansberg, with assists by Allison Koffron, Pike and Seydel.

Reducing plasticity one grocery bag at a time

Local grocer is doing small part to save environment

SOLON– People might be surprised to learn that planet Earth has a local warrior fighting one of its biggest battles right here in little Solon, Iowa.
Former Solon resident Pam Landgrebe was surprised, at least, when she visited Sam’s Main Street Market a few weeks ago and found herself without a reusable bag. As an environmental advocate, it has become Landgrebe’s practice to forego single-use plastic bags when shopping, but she came to Sam’s unarmed with her own bags because this trip to the store was unexpected.
Equally unexpected was the offer of a free, reusable cloth bag instead.

Old Gold to host premier of Little Brown Church movie

SOLON– Solon’s Old Gold Diner will be hosting the premiere showing of “The Little Brown Church in the Vale: The Movie” Tuesday, June 17, at the Solon United Methodist Church.
The movie is produced and directed by Oskaloosa native Brian Hanson, now of Franklin, Tennessee.
“The Little Brown Church in the Vale: The Movie” is the delightful story of The Little Brown Church, the “Church in the Wildwood” song that made it famous, and the people whose lives have been touched by this “little brown church” in Nashua.

Solon Vietnam vet receives Purple Heart 45 years later

RURAL SOLON– On April 22, 1969, Ronald “Steve” Durr was standing in the back of an Air Force C-123 cargo plane as it was departing a Special Forces camp deep in the jungles of Vietnam. It was a mission the staff sergeant and his crew had flown many times as they brought in vital supplies to the Green Berets, landing just long enough for Durr, the crew’s loadmaster, to send the cargo down the plane’s loading ramp as it took off again. The area was known to be a hotbed of enemy activity, and on this day the Viet Cong made their presence known.

Hawkeyes look forward

Hawk Talk

By Don Lund
Sports Writer

This is the second part of a two-part story of the Hawkeyes men’s basketball team with assistant coach Kirk Speraw.
Last week we talked about the season, the Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA tournament, which was the first time since 2006 that the Hawks made the big dance.
Iowa had three seniors lead the way and they helped the Hawkeyes win 53 home games in their four-year career.
The 53 wins ties for fourth in program history.
Iowa’s 1988, 2008 and 2009 seniors won 54 home games.
That stat kind of surprised me.
