Flying Colors

OXFORD– It’s a colorful way to make some green.
Clear Creek Elementary (CCE) will host the second annual CCE Color Fun Run/Walk 5K Saturday, Sept. 27, at 9 a.m., and the public is invited.
The race/walk is open to anyone who wants to have fun and is up for helping a good cause.
CCE’s Parent Teacher Group (PTG) was searching for a way to involve more families in its annual school-wide fundraisers. PTG members often heard similar comments from parents when it came time for kids to sell wrapping paper, magazines, chocolate or other traditional fundraising products door-to-door.

Girls third, boys fifth at Benton roundhouse run

Key to success? Run with the pack

ATKINS– The pack is there. The task before Solon is to slide it up the finish list a little higher.
On their way to a third-place team finish at the Benton Cross Country Invitational Sept. 13, Solon’s girls had all five scoring runners within 16 seconds of each other. The boys pack stretched a little wider, on their way to fifth place in the nine-team Roundhouse Trail ‘Run Through the Woods’ in Atkins.

Xavier delivers 28-0 loss to Spartans

CEDAR RAPIDS– Solon head football coach Kevin Miller hopes his team will respond in a positive manner.
No. 2 Cedar Rapids Xavier handed No. 3 Solon its first loss of the season Friday at Saints Field in Cedar Rapids, a convincing 28-0 shut-out in a Class 3A match-up.
Xavier held the Spartan offense in check, limiting Solon to just 40 yards of rushing and 121 yards of total offense.
On the flip side, the Saints, fueled by 172 rushing yards by senior running back Jay Kortemeyer, generated 369 total yards on the evening.

Girls unbeaten at home

Fall to CR Prairie at Linn-Mar tournament

SOLON– Even when they were down a handful of points, there was the feeling the Solon Lady Spartans would come back.
And come back they did, overcoming a four-point deficit to win the first set 25-22 against the Williamsburg Raiders Sept. 11, and eventually taking the match, 3-1.
Solon, ranked atop the Class 3A schools in volleyball, took the second set 25-16, but left the door open for the Raiders after Williamsburg captured the third game, 25-18. The Lady Spartans righted the ship and put away the Raiders 25-18 in the fourth set.
