PERFECTION

By Don Lund
Sports Writer

The women’s and men’s basketball team had two wins last week, plus the wrestlers dominated both of their matches.
The women started it out with a home win against Minnesota last Wednesday.
I don’t know if Iowa’s 78-71 victory against the Gophers was a must-win, but it was pretty close.
The Hawks started the season 0-2 including a loss at home against 15th-ranked Penn State, so to start 0-3 with two home losses would be tough to overcome.

Hawks take down Cowboys

Halk Talk

The Hawkeye wrestlers picked up a big 24-6 win over fifth-ranked Oklahoma State Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa had eight wins, a couple of upsets and some exciting matches.
Tony Ramos (133) started the year ranked No. 1 but has lost two matches so far this season. He only had two losses all of last year.
Tony came into the meet ranked fourth and his opponent, Jon Morrison, was ranked first.
Tony has the energy and talent to excite the Hawkeye crowd, and boy did he deliver against the Cowboys.

In November the editors of School Library Journal picked their top children’s picture books of 2013. Below is the list of titles, for 2013, that we have available at the Solon Public Library.
• “Steam Train, Dream Train” by Sherri Duskey Rinker. In this book with rhyming text, the dream train pulls into the station and all the different cars are loaded by the animal workers, each with the appropriate cargo.

Start date, end date an issue again

SOLON– Remember last year when the Solon school board was split over the start date for school?
Are you ready for round two?
At Monday night’s school board meeting, the start and end dates for the 2014-15 school year were discussed, but this time, an informal poll showed board members leaning the other way.
Last year, board president Dave Asprey broke a 2-2 tie, going against the recommendation of the district’s calendar committee and siding with board members in favor of a later start date for school.

Adjustments for (almost) all of God’s creatures

Dr. Helen Beck, one of a growing number of animal chiropractors

RURAL SOLON– As you pull into the driveway of Jake and Helen Beck’s home, a pair of horses trot over to the fence to look you over.
It’s no surprise the equines are there. Horses have been a large part of Helen’s life, and now they make up most of her veterinary practice.
Helen Beck, DVM, provides veterinary care, primarily to horses. She’s also one of a growing number of animal chiropractors providing adjustments to traditional family pets such as dogs and cats, with the background and knowledge to care for almost any of God’s creatures, great or small.
