North Liberty fire department reminds homeowners to shovel out fire hydrants

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Fire Fighters are urging residents to clear snow around fire hydrants located in their neighborhoods. With more winter weather in the forecast, it is important fire hydrants remain clear of ice and snow to allow fire fighters easy access. Fire doubles in size every 17 seconds.
Having unimpeded access to the hydrants can make a significant difference while on a fire scene. Please help fire fighters by removing snow from an area of at least three feet around the fire hydrant.

NL water, sewer utility budgets projected to rise

By Lori Lindner
North Liberty Leader

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s too early to tell whether or not residents of North Liberty will see rate hikes on their water and sewer bills.
What is known is that the expenses for both municipal utilities are going to climb, and taxpayers will eventually be funding those increases in one way or another.
Even though the city adds accounts and sells more gallons of water each year– thus generating more revenues– a larger population also creates more demands on the city’s water and sewer systems.

A new chapter begins

NORTH LIBERTY– Dee Crowner has cracked a lot of books in the last 26 years. She has worked through three major construction projects, mentored a staff that grew from one to 14 in number, supervised dozens of fundraisers, and helped forge a path of progress as the population of North Liberty exploded by 170 percent in just 12 years.
Now she is looking forward to authoring a whole new chapter in life.

Penn to expand

Two boards approve design for Penn school addition

By Alex Kline
North Liberty Leader

NORTH LIBERTY– When you talk to principal Kristy Heffner about the upcoming Penn Elementary expansion, you can almost hear a sigh of relief.
“This is an awesome plan,” Heffner expressed about the recently approved design plans for the school’s 23,000 square foot addition. “We’re really excited about it.”
The Iowa City Community School District Board of Education approved the plan at their Dec. 17 meeting. The over $9.3 million project is slated to begin construction in the spring of 2014 according to the district’s 10- year facilities master plan.

Played to the hilt

Sir Oblong Fitz Oblong, played by CCA’s Mollie Sherman, demonstrates what she would do if she were to take up Squire Blackheart on his challenge to a duel in the Clear Creek Amana High School drama department’s winter production, “The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew.” For more photos of the play, see page A8. Spartans outlast Cardinals in 2-OT thriller

MAQUOKETA– The Spartans already had one overtime win under their belts this season, why not another?
And why not make it two overtimes?
That’s what it took for Solon to down the Maquoketa Cardinals, 52-51, Friday on the road in Maquoketa.
Austin Miller made two free throws with 15 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the Spartans the lead for good, and Maquoketa’s subsequent pass was deflected, preventing the Cardinals from getting off a shot before time expired.
