Solon girls push past Maquoketa

SOLON– The temperatures were freezing outside, and the shooting inside was almost as cold.
Solon’s girls played back-to-back home games coming out of winter break Friday and Saturday, defeating Maquoketa, 37-31, and then falling to Anamosa, 28-25.
Both the Lady Spartans and their opponents had a hard time finding the bottom of the basket.
Hosting the Maquoketa Cardinals, Solon trailed 16-15 at the half, but held Maquoketa without a point in third quarter to take a 25-16 lead into the fourth.

Hills Bank donates more than $1,700 to Solon School District

SOLON– The Classroom Cash program from Hills Bank recently donated $1,712.92 to the Solon Community School District. These funds will be used to support programs and services which enhance student educational experiences.

Junior Optimists sponsoring mini dance marathon Jan. 10

SOLON– The Junior Optimist members will be sponsoring a mini dance marathon for students and staff members in the middle school on Jan. 10. The ‘mini’ will take place during the school day. All proceeds will be donated to the University of Iowa Dance Marathon. This will be the 20th year that the U of I hosts a Dance Marathon. The Dance Marathon provides emotional and financial support for pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant patients and their families treated at the U of I Children’s Hospital.

Ice skating at recreation and nature area open

The ice skating rink at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area is ready for use. Ice skating is free and open to the public during daylight hours.

Yoga class to start Jan. 7

A new six-week yoga class will be offered beginning Tuesday, Jan. 7. Yoga will be offered on Tuesday evenings from 5:45-6:45 p.m. at the lower level of Brosh Chapel Community Center. Little Tykes basketball program offered for first/second graders

First and Second grade boys and girls are invited to learn the basic fundamentals of basketball, proper sportsmanship, teamwork and most importantly, have FUN! The Saturday morning program will be held at the Lakeview Elementary gym beginning Feb. 22. Online registration is available at https://solon-iowa.cogran.com/.

Brannaman named Women’s Club Jennie Award winner

Charter member of Solon Women’s Club honored

SOLON– Rita Brannaman of the Solon Women’s Club was chosen as winner of the 2012-2014 GFWC/Iowa Federation of Women’s Clubs’ (GFWC) “Jennie Award.” The General Federation of Women’s Clubs awards one woman from each state this honor during each two-year administration for lifetime personal excellence. The GFWC Jennie Award is named in honor of GFWC’s founder, Jane Cunningham Croly, who wrote for national newspapers under the pseudonym, Jennie June.

Sharp to retire from VA director’s post

Solon’s Barry Sharp pleased with the progress in serving health needs of veterans

IOWA CITY– Walking through the Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Iowa City can be intimidating to say the least. Even on Christmas Eve, the hallways of the VA are full of patients and staff bustling in and out of exam rooms. Among the many faces, one is familiar, and he will say “hello” to everyone.
This friendly face is that of Iowa City Veteran Affairs hospital medical director and self-proclaimed “Solon-oid,” Barry Sharp. He will be retiring from the position in January after seven years at the Iowa City campus.

Veterans Memorial breakfast Jan. 19

SOLON– The Veterans Memorial Committee will be hosting a special breakfast Sunday, Jan. 19, from 7:30-11:30 a.m. at the Solon American Legion. The menu will include pancakes, sausage, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon, juice, coffee and milk. The cost for adults is $7, and $4 for children ages 6-12. Children age 5 and under eat free. All proceeds go to the Veterans Memorial Fund for maintenance purposes.
