Trojans knock off Chiefs

West High 59, Keokuk 22

IOWA CITY– The West High boys varsity cruised to a 59-22 win over the Keokuk Chiefs Tuesday, Dec. 9, in the first home game of the 2014-15 season. The non-conference win gave West a 3-0 record heading into Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) play.
The Trojans held the Chiefs to four points in the first period, taking the quarter 12-4. The Chiefs attempted to rally back in the second quarter but West took a 30-14 lead into the locker room at the halftime break. The Trojans held Keokuk to only eight points in the second half while unleashing a 20-point barrage in the third quarter.

Clipper girls lose a close one in OT

Stormin’ Pointers 53, CCA 51

TIFFIN– Excitement turned to disappointment and a sense of what could’ve been Friday, Dec. 12, in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) gym as the Clipper girls faced the 12th-ranked Class 3A Stormin’ Pointers from Center Point-Urbana.
The Pointers won the varsity contest in overtime, 53-51, dropping the Creek Girls to 2-4.

TIFFIN — In 1982, playwright Michael Frayn penned a satirical look at the world of theatre titled “Noises Off.” It won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Play and the London Evening Standard’s Theatre Award for Best Comedy.

Dec. 31 reception to recognize service of outgoing supervisor John Etheredge

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Board of Supervisors will host a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 23, to thank Supervisor John Etheredge for his service. Etheredge’s term will expire on Dec. 31. The reception is open to the public and will be held at the Johnson County Administration Building, 913 S. Dubuque St. in Iowa City.
Etheredge began his term on March 11, 2013, to complete the term vacated when Sally Stutsman resigned after being elected to the Iowa Legislature.

Gerdin family gifts $300K to Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. Luke’s

CEDAR RAPIDS– Hundreds of families with hospitalized children will be the beneficiaries of a major gift from the Gerdin Family Foundation. The family is gifting $300,000 to St. Luke’s Foundation for the creation of the Ronald McDonald Family Room®, which is currently under construction on the second floor of St. Luke’s Center for Women’s and Children’s Health. The Foundation will use $100,000 of the gift to open an endowment to support future capital needs as there will always be a demand for this type of facility for the families of critically-ill children.

Innovative student-professional collaboration to bring new building to CCA campus next spring

OXFORD — Last March, Joe Greathouse, assistant professor in construction management at Kirkwood Community College, introduced to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school board the idea of an innovative educational experience.
Greathouse spoke of Kirkwood’s Architectural, Construction and Engineering (ACE) academy, which prepares students for two- or four-year degrees, a trade program or even entry into the construction field by providing mentors who work directly with students.

Kinze opens new facility in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Kinze Manufacturing, Inc. held a ribbon cutting ceremony Dec. 10 to celebrate the opening of its newest office facility in North Liberty. The Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce attended the ceremony to celebrate the opening of the building, which marks Kinze’s first presence in the North Liberty area.

NL man threatens to set himself on fire, charged with arson and domestic abuse

NORTH LIBERTY– According to a release issued by the City of North Liberty Telecommunications Department, officers of the North Liberty Police Department were dispatched to 254 Golfview Ct., North Liberty, in reference to a domestic disturbance on Dec. 15, around 9:15 p.m. Through the investigation, officers learned that Fernando Maldonado, age 38, (AKA Javier T.

ICCSD must revise diversity policy

USDA confirms district cannot use Free/Reduced Lunch data

IOWA CITY- The Iowa City Community School Distirct (ICCSD) received confirmation that it must divorce its diversity policy from Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL) data.
Superintendent Stephen Murley told the board last Tuesday that the use violates the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) rules on what the data can and cannot be used for.
The USDA has given the school district until Jan. 31, 2015, to cease using the data.

Robotics can and bottle drive Jan. 3

SOLON– Solon Robotics will host a can and bottle drive on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, in Solon from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Student team members will be going door-to-door asking for cans and bottles to help raise funds for competitions around the state. Anyone needing pick-up on Friday evening or who lives outside the Solon city limits, please contact Jami Wolf at 319-481-7088.
