Michael Linnell 

Michael Charles Linnell, 63, of Des Moines, was led by the angels to the arms of Jesus on May 31, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
He was born on Nov. 30, 1950, in Cedar Rapids, son of Charles and Dorothy Linnell.
Survivors include his wife Carrol of Des Moines, son Charles (Sheila) of and grandson Gavin of Sterling, Virginia; brothers Jack (Sue) Linnell, Andy (Sarah) Linnell and Pat Linnell; and sister Doreen (Terry) Skilling.
He is proceeded in death by his father Charles Linnell, grandparents John and Ceila Kessler and Walter and Marie Linnell.

Margaret Herman

Margaret A. (VanKerckvoorde) Herman, 90, lifelong resident of Belle Plaine, died Monday, May 26, 2014, at Highland Ridge Senior Living in Williamsburg. Funeral services were May 30 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Belle Plaine, with burial following at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Eldon Hanson

Eldon LeRoy Hanson, 68, of West Branch, passed away Monday, May 26, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Iowa City. Memorial Services were held May 30 at St. Bernadette’s Church, West Branch. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.
Eldon is survived by his wife Marilyn Hanson of West Branch; three daughters, Jenny (Ben) Hemingway of Iowa City; Dr. Kristin Hanson of North Liberty; Kelly Proctor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; two sisters, Elaine Ketchum of Denver, Colorado; and Esther (Glen) Frisbie of Springville.

Richard Gent

Richard D. “Dick” Gent, 74, of Tiffin, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City. Mass of Christian Burial was May 29 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cosgrove. The Rev. Edmond Dunn officiated. Burial followed in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, The Iowa SIDS Foundation or St. Peter’s Cemetery (for cemetery care).

Jerry Evers

Jerry L. Evers, 66, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Services were held May 30 at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids by the Rev. Dr. Kay Slocum. Graveside services were held May 31, Stanton Cemetery in Stanton, Nebraska.

Again, it was time to get my driver’s license renewed. I couldn’t wait to see what novel requirements they had dreamed up since the last time I partook of this adventure. Even though (because of my age, I suppose) I am now required to renew my license every two years, there are always new innovations to the process.

NORTH LIBERTY– Sandi Spurrell loves babies. She is an artist quite skilled in drawing and graphic design. She adores children and families, enjoys meeting new people and making fast friends, and is killer with a camera.
Wrapped all up in one package, these qualities are what make Spurrell an excellent on-location photographer.
Spurrell’s journey through various stages of life and different facets of her career led her to start her own business, Sandi Spurrell Photography, run from her home in North Liberty. She is now accepting new clients.

Carberry runs for Democratic nomination

JOHNSON COUNTY– Johnson County supervisor Democratic candidate Mike Carberry traces his ambition back to his roots.
The son of a large animal veterinarian and a school teacher, Carberry grew up on a small farm in Benton County.
“I spent a lot of time on small family farms from my dad, and I learned a real conservation ethic from those farmers,” said Carberry. He mentions his participation in Boy Scouts and earning the rank of Eagle Scout as another influence.

Members of the North Liberty Police Department and the North Liberty Volunteer Fire Department honor the late Mayor Tom Salm during his funeral procession on Friday, May 23. Salm passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 18, after suffering an aortic aneurysm, at the age of 61. (photo by Lori Lindner)
