West volleyball takes second at Dubuque Invitational

No. 1 Bettendorf slips by in semifinals

DUBUQUE– The West High Women of Troy participated in the 2015 Dubuque Invitational, a volleyball tournament so big it had to be played at both Hempstead and Senior high schools on Saturday, Sept. 26.
West High went 3-1 on the day and was 3-0 at the conclusion of pool play. Coach Randy Dolson and company took a No. 2 seed into the playoffs, but the top-ranked team in the state in Class 5A, Bettendorf, knocked the Women of Troy out in the semifinal round, 2-0.

Hsu wins 200-meter individual medley

CEDAR RAPIDS– Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School was the site of the 2015 Cougar Invitational swimming and diving meet Saturday, Sept. 26, with the West High Women of Troy competing against Kennedy and five other teams. The Women of Troy finished fourth in team points behind champion Pleasant Valley, Johnston and the host, Cougars. Decorah, rival City High Little Hawks and Cedar Rapids Jefferson rounded out the field of contenders.
Erica Hsu picked up West’s only win of the meet by taking the 200-meter individual medley in 2:13.35.

Another connection planned along Hoover Trail

Funding will determine whether construction starts in spring

SOLON– If you like to ride bicycles, there’s nothing but good news.
The 5.8-mile missing link between two extensive Iowa trail systems might be completed as soon as 2018.
The plans to extend the Hoover Trail from Ely to Solon are progressing and Johnson County Conservation Department Program Manager Brad Friedhof thinks if all goes well, the first phase of the project could go out to potential bidders next spring.
The Conservation Department hosted a second informational meeting on the project at Solon City Hall Aug. 26 and there was a lot to share.

CORALVILLE– West High’s Women of Troy Swimming and Diving team picked up another victory Tuesday, Sept. 22, by defeating the Golden Eagles of Dubuque Wahlert Catholic High School, 121 to 62, at the Coralville Recreation Center.
200-meter medley relay: 1, IC West (Alison Hsu, Jennifer Du, Elaina Martz, Ariel Roghair), 1:59.30. 2, IC West (Morgan Brunk, Rachel Ding, Katy Alden, Mae Grahs), 2:08.51.
200-meter freestyle: 2, Alleyna Thomas, 2:07.76. 3, Lauren Katz, 2:15.81. 4, Natalie Shoultz, 2:19.37.

LAWRENCE, KANSAS — West High’s varsity cross country teams competed in the Rim Rock Farm High School Cross Country Classic in Lawrence, Kansas Saturday, Sept. 26 with the Women of Troy placing second in overall team points and the Trojans placing sixth.
St. Thomas Aquinas of Overland Park, Kansas was the top girls team while the Trojan boys finished behind St. Thomas Aquinas, College Park, Blue Springs, Rockhurst and Brentwood Academy.

Clippers pick up second win

CCA 17, Keokuk Chiefs 10

KEOKUK– The Creek is rising again.
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity football team improved its record to 2-1 in Class 3A District No.5, and 2-3 overall with a 17-10 win over Keokuk Friday, Sept. 25, on the Chiefs’ happy hunting grounds.
Aaron Akers scored both of the Clippers’ touchdowns. Both were 1-yard runs and backed up with Tyreke Williams’ extra point kicks.
Akers scored first in the first quarter, and the Chiefs knotted the game with a 22-yard pass in the second. A 26-yard field goal gave the Chiefs a 10-7 lead at halftime.

Trojans roll over Davenport Central’s Blue Devils

Henderson’s air assault, keeper gives West first season victory

IOWA CITY– Six touchdowns by the Iowa City West High Trojans doomed the Blue Devils of Davenport Central Friday, Sept. 25, at Trojan Field. The win, on Homecoming Night for West, was the first of the season.
West High quarterback Alex Henderson connected three times with Oliver Martin and twice with Devontae Lane for five touchdowns. He kept the ball for a sixth as West won, 42-14, on Homecoming Night.

Cougars too much for Women of Troy

IOWA CITY– Macy Anderson’s 16 kills led the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars to a 3-0 win over Iowa City West High Tuesday, Sept. 22, in the West High gym.
Kennedy was ranked fifth in Class 5A with a 12-5 record overall and 3-0 record in the MVC’s Valley Division while West was sixth at 13-4 overall and 3-0 in Valley Division competition.
The Cougars won the hard-fought three-game set 25-21, 25-21 and 25-15.
Emily Halverson led West’s offensive efforts with nine kills, Chandler Haight added seven and Ali Tauchen and Maddie Laffey each had six.

A scoop of kindness

At Heyn’s Ice Cream shop in North Liberty, owner Peggy Cullivan reflects on what Heyn’s means to her

NORTH LIBERTY– The history of the business is as follows: The Iowa City location of Heyn’s Ice Cream started in 1981, originally as a second location of Dane’s Dairy run by Paul Heyn. Soon after, Dane’s Dairy decided to give ownership of the store to Heyn, who renamed it Heyn’s Ice Cream. Peggy Cullivan began working at the shop when she was 14 years old, became manager at age 19, and inherited the store from Heyn in 2007. Earlier this summer, she opened a new location at 25 E. Cherry St. in North Liberty.
Those are the facts. But there is more to the story:

Smart money: NL gets good news in borrowing scenario

NORTH LIBERTY– Even while borrowing $9.995 million, the City of North Liberty is saving its taxpayers money.
Tionna Pooler, of Independent Public Advisors, LLC, the city’s financial advisory firm, told the council at its Sept. 22 meeting that when it comes to issuing bonds, “there is nothing but good news to tell you.”
